Violent rebounds | ADHD Information
Drug usage can cause all sorts of angry rages. Oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder frequently occur with ADHD. Rebound agitation is usually confined only to the couple hours around the medication wearing off.yeah, rebounds aren't funI am not sure where to start with my story, so here goes. My 15 yr.old daughter was diagnosed with ADD and Depression in April of this year. They put her on Adderall 40 mg, Lexapro 20mg, Seroquel 100mg, and Trazadone 100mg. Shortly after starting these meds she started raging out of the blue. Simple things like telling her to be home at a certain time would just cause her to explode. She would start screaming the four letter word, telling me sexually vulgar things I could go and do, screaming every foul word at us. Threatening to kill herself and the rest of us (We have a two yr old in the house), etc. It has been a nightmare. This past Thursday she ended up in the ER from an overdose of different drugs, she somehow managed to find. She had been stashing. I thought I had everything well hidden. We are lucky to have her with us, she is now in a behavioral center until we can figure how to help and what has caused this. Has anyone heard of Adderall causing something like this or any of the other drugs? My daughter is not the same outgoing person she once was, she use to have so many friends (now she has only a couple), she hates school (where before she loved going), has failed all but two classes. She seems so negative now, where before we could talk to her and reason with her, and she would respond. Now she hates us with a passion. I am still waiting on the therapists to contact me. I am exhausted, but still trying to educate myself on these drugs and Add. I have no clue as to where to begin in my help for her. Thank You for letting me post. My son has been adhd since age 6, has not qualified for iep's since he always seems to miss school from switching from med to med or getting into stupid trouble at school for not being organized or distrupting the class. . He now is very moody and loses his temper quickly and does things without thinking. He wants to run with his friends and girls day and night and can't slow himself down and now has to go to summer school. Because of his attitude and bad tempers and blow outs the pyschiatrist thinks maybe he is bi-polar now and not adhd, eventhough he is never depressed just more moody angry and has a very bad temper, He just started on trilleptal 150 mg and is going up to 300 mg next week. He still needs something to help him focus anyone know if you can take a mood stabalizer and also a stiumlant? My son said his Metadate made him very moody, not hungry, not social and grades did not improve. I have noticed tics on allot of the stimulant meds and straterra did nothing, the Metadate time release worked great if your children really are ADHD[QUOTE=beccabear05]I am not sure where to start with my story, so here goes. you might check into Metadate it works well..good luck
Beccabear, it really sounds as though your daughter has a mood disorder. The adderall is a stimulant and Lexapro, an antidepressant. Both of these can trigger the behaviors you are describing in someone with a mood disorder. Trazadone helps them to sleep and shouldn't cause this behavior. The Seraquel is an anti-psychotic used for the treatment of mania but it certainly doesn't seem to be doing what I would have thought it should. It sounds like your daughter needs some changes in her meds.
epstech2, yes they can give a mood stabilizer and a stimulant together. However, the general line of thinking is that they should first stabilize the moods and then add other meds, as needed, to address remaining symptoms. This is also what I would say that beccabear's daughter needs, a stabilization of moods and then adding meds to address the remaining problems.
my older brother used to have REALLY bad rebounds from ritalin. he would go from his calm, medicated self to very very unhappy and frusterated with everything. sometimes he was just downright mean.
Is there anyone who has violent rebounds or a child who experiences them? When I was on Adderall XR mine were more violent and snappy. Since I've been on Concerta they've been more like depression and sharp remarks and the feeling of being rushed. When I say violent, I mean, not slam-the-door violent but more of a rage. Just wondering.
My 7 year old who was thought to have Inattentive form of ADD, had big rebound on Adderall XR - raging and belligerent. Could not tell you why he was mad...just mad. After a few trial and errors...found that the generic form of the medicine was worse, taking it with other meds for asthma was not good either. After making adjustments with non-generic and taking alone...still had bad rebound. Finally went to normal version of Adderall (non-XR) and had school give him dose at noon. We also started packing him a lunch of his favorite foods (part of problem was he was not eating at lunch either)...This combination worked better as far as rebound. We still had issues with his in-attention...and ultimately found he had visual distortion...which mimics ADD (www.irlen.com).
I have been told by other friends/parents that Adderall did not work for their child...due to emotional side effects...so they tried other products Strattera and Concerta...and were very happy.
Don't be afraid to try something else if you are getting bad side effects...every child is different....and you know your child better than everyone else.
my son is on concerta and he was having the violent rebound. he's still taking the concerta and has also been put on tenex, it is a high blood pressure med, but in kids with adhd it helps to calm them. it took a few days for it to kick in but when it did what a change, it has helped so much..he's a joy to be around again. and it didn't take anything away from him, he's the same kid!!!
