Seizures? | ADHD Information

Hi,

New to this board but I have a meds question. My son has been on ritalin
5 mg at breakfast and lunch for almost a year now. I also take ritalin. We
both have had very minor side effects -appitite supression-but nothing
major. The last few nights he has been waking up and sleepwalking
around the house. My husband would be up watching TV and he would
just wonder in the living room and have no idea what was going on. Last
night I heard him cry out and went to find him again in the living room. I
tried to give him a hug but it was like he couldn't put his arms around me
becuase -like he was trying to bat at a fly or something. He kept saying
he was so confused and didn't seem able to sit down on my lap. His
movements were kind of jerky as well. I am afraid he may have been
having some sort of really mild seizure.

In a few seconds it had passed and he didn't have anything else like that
happen. No more meds and a trip to the Dr is planned for Monday,

Has anyone else had this happen to thier kids? I've read ritalin might
cause problems in kids who were siezure prone, but we have never had
anything like that happen before? Does stratterra pose the same risks?

Thanks all,
Tina

My doctor told me that Ritalin will interupt sleep if they take it to late in the day. Definatly talk to your doctor, and if you are not 100% happy with what he says, get a second opinion.

Good luck and let us know what happens:)

That is not a seizure it is a ritalin side effect? my son had a simular reaction and is now taking strattera and he no longer has that issue. my doctor said that in some children this is normal just like baby's have temperature seizures ritalin causes a sort in there brains (usually at night cause they are dreaming and brain waves are over stimulated and no way to run off steam) best way to discribe it try other alternitives (stratter is a non stimulant) ADHD treatmentJust an adjunct This behavior does happen in children without ritalin but
anything that interupts rem sleep wil cause this type of behavior, even
coffee. watch time and dose.I agree, does not sound like a Ritalin side effect.   If having doubts take him to a pedi-neurologist.  We just had a 1hr and a 48 hour EEG with a full Video monitor at home...not fun but ruled out what we though we absence seizures.
