A Week In To Concerta - Is This Normal? | ADHD Information

Share

So after a week of taking Concerta 18mg, I can't say it has been an entirely pleasant experience. I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Although the initial *tweaked* feeling in my body is gone that I experienced the first couple days, I still can feel that I am on meds. No trouble sleeping thankfully, but in the mornings I am very spacey and am having more trouble focusing and concentrating than before. This is until I take the pill and it is in my system.

I get up early (5:30am) normally to say morning prayers (i'm an orthodox Jew) and read the paper before work. Both tasks have become more challenging in that focusing on either is now becoming difficult.

Are my experiences normal? I am a physically healthy 32 y/o male if that is important. Thank you.

It's what happened to me. I was an early riser right before I started (re)taking it a couple years ago (I'm also your age). I was getting up at 6am everyday. As soon as I started the meds (not sure if it was ritalin or concerta) I could not get up in the morning. I wake up feeling very tired and heavy.

Although I am better about getting up and getting going in the mornings, the meds certainly make it much more difficult; the term 'dragging myself out of bed' is very apt.

Sausage: These meds take a little transition time to have them fall in place. 18 mg is really light. When I first started taking Concerta (I am not an advocate for taking medications, believe me), I had the same experience. As you increase your dosage you will notice a better sense of control and clarity - not unlike putting on glasses - when you look at the things that you always put off or procrastinated. The Nike commercial that says "Just Do IT" becomes real. you just want to do it and get it done. I suggest making a journel for yourself, taking note of your food intake and caffeine - you may want to remind yourself to eat because Concerta tends to kill your appetite. Always remember that you are seeking the optimal dosage for you as an individual. Not all folks are alike and their need for this med is just as unique. I hope this has helped you in some small way. Remember that this is a journey of empowerment and that you are taking the first step in taking control of your life.  Z
