What ever happened to kindergarden preparing for future grades.Who decided all kids should be reading when leaving kindergarden. Here it's that way. Must do it very well also.I had a teacher tell me than by third behind. Maybe the real problem is the expectations not our kids.We all learn different paces and ways. When the one size fits all is not a sucess. My answer is place kids on same reading level together. No grades. We all have week spots. Without improving reading skills what going to happen to these kids future education needs.
The state legislature decides what our kids need to know. Simple.
In 1957 Sputnic went up from Russia before the US hit space. The government decided it was schools fault that we failed. They created Kindergarden and pushed the first grade curriculum down a year.
In CA we have one of the highest set of standards in the US. Great! Except that ALL kids can't reach them. Assessment drives instruction. Teachers are judged by kids test scores not by any other measure. Teachers run scared because they are pointed to by the state, district, principals and parents. Teachers need more help because kids are harder today than they were 25 years ago. 25 years ago I had 2 kids in my class who needed special ed services. Now it is more like 40% of your kids. Why? Does that really matter? No blame, No finger pointing. Just grab up your car keys and come help.
If your child has trouble in school. Come to school. Spend a month in the classroom. Get educated about what is expected.
Stop blaming teachers and start writing letters to the government. In CA the standards are so high that it is unrealistic for all kids to reach them. All kids are not equal. All kids can learn, all kids can be loved, they can laugh and they can enjoy learning. But, all kids don't laugh at school or enjoy learning.
I received a letter from the state of CA that told me just how many of my students from last year did better on the test, the same or worse. My name, No kids names. My reputation? I choose to teach ADHD, bipolar and all that goes with it. I love my kids. I threw the paper away. My students, my kids, were happy. They learned so much. But the test arrived and they all froze up and got scared. I for one am sick to death of that test and as I spend the last ten years of my career I will NOT beat myself up, or my families, or my kids.
If you can figure out a way to stop this craziness...I am all for it.

I say they do push kids at an early age trying to compete with other countries on smartness. And to add to the supplies my daughter is in kindergarden this year and we had to buy a whole list of supplies, glue sticks, crayons, t-shirts, smock, etc. My daughter was screened at age 4 and they let her fall through the cracks now in kindergarden different story. My child is not on any kind of medications and I want to keep her off them as long as possible. Not all are medicating children to please the drug companies everyone here has different stories they are dealing with every child with ADHD is different some worse some better. It is not easy being a parent when you are dealing with a disability, some of these meds help change their lives for the betterWho decided all kids should be reading when leaving kindergarden?

Uh-oh! It's happened again. QUICK! We must react with the blasphemy-o-ray
If there ever was a time to use the memory cell extraction ray gun, now it's the time to use it!
Now hold still Daniel, this won't hurt at all.
Obviously you're talking about ADD right?
But what you said is true, sort of. The raised the standards too high for that level, instead of "creative playtime" which is what they SHOULD be doing you almost have them reading War and Peace! And (this is just an exaggerated example) if they don't grasp the concept of that book they call their parents and tell them your child might have a learning disability, Have you heard of ritalin? What happened to art? Even teachers are brainwashed with the vague advertisements nowadays. The drug companies want to confuse everyone and anyone they can. Sure there kids out there who have ADHD and may need the medication, but not everyone. That's just sad that I see parents giving drugs as early as kindergarten. The child hasn't even adjusted to their surroundings yet. Plus there are home remedies that stabilize ADD but they don't want to know it's out there. The drug companies are getting too carried away now. They're so mad for money that now they say "Ask your doctor about "Depotol" and worse they don't even tell you what the product is for.
"Hey, Doctor, I'm suppose to ask you about "Depotol"
"Oh, So you have hemroids?"
They start to invent stuff, Like acid reflux disease, come'on you'de have to be crazier than Michael Jackson to fall for that one.
New Alcohol38442.1953472222Our son does SDAA inplace because he won't pass the other (TAKS).If your child attends Se ask for the alternativs as I demanded it. That year the teacher agreed. That year teacher didn't teach. Tryed to have removed denied. Our son told us this. Thank god this year a better teacher. I agree I mentioned it to our principal he rejected any additinal requets made. I have filed complaints with everyone I could think of. Path helped with this. This a group to help us parents. Found in back of our disability rights book provided by school. We just now medicated because the pediatrician said not adhd. Who do we believe. She is in another state Virginia. Ava stanzcak is her name great with kids with disabilities. We miss her.The news ones says autism maybe also a issue. We love her also. Why are kids only checked for one thing when there are many childhood disorders out there. Check out 50 conditions that mimic adhd. Our son has some of these. His spine isn't working right. Exray showed it at chiropractor office. He shows no frontol lob problem which is what I thought decides adhd. His is in left posterial area. The EEG shows only a intermintent slowing. Please help if anyone noes more than me.
