ADD AND MATH | ADHD Information
MY SON HAS ADD AND HAS A HARD TIME WITH MATH IN SCHOOL DOES HE HAVE TO SHOW THE WORK IF HE USES A CALCULATOR?What grade is he in? I beleive he would have to show the work.
How is his math in Real life? It may not be the ADD, find out what kind
of learner he is. (If you had him formally tested for ADHD, Check the
raw results)
In Second grade my son was having trouble with addition. I was shocked
and rather alarmed ( I am a bit of a math geek and my mom taught math)
I always thought that Nikhil excelled at math. When I investigated the
problem it turned out to be a difficulty with the way they teach math
at his school. I asked my mom for advice and she spent time with Nikhil
and I watched. In two weeks he went from being behind to being well
ahead of the class. Now if only I could get him to focus to avoid
beting careless.
helpo1, have you considered a tutor? My son has a LD in math and the
school tested him and now he goes to a tutor at another school in the
afternoons. He is doing better and i also have a private tutor once a
week. can be eexpensive though it's worth it. I was told by the
teachers, bettter to get him help now because when he gets older it
will get harder for him.
Hi I can relate to your son alot. I have an extremely high IQ but math was allways a struggle. It was really easy up until I got into about 5th grade and learning fractions and anything past that was a struggle although I was not diagnosed until I reached 8th grade. Noone thought I had it because of my IQ, which really to me has nothing to do with ADHD or ADD but whatever atleast I'm diagnosed now. I am now attending a really good diagnostic school for a 45 day assesment because I had stoped taking my medication without telling anyone and had a serious substance abuse problem which led to an arrest. You might consider hireing an educational advocate they might be a little expensive but so worth it, when the school tried to just suspend me indefinatly because the arrest was on a felony drug charge she really got them good and they had to pay for tutoring for the rest of my first semester and then pay 40 grand for me to go to this school instead the one they send kids that belong in jail. Your situation is different than mine but if you got an educational advocate I'm willing to bet you could get your son into a good diagnostic school for an assesment and they can watch how he learns and see what he needs to learn and how to teach it to him and give the infromation to his sending school and with that info you, your educational advocate, and the school can decide weather it is best for him to return to the school he came from or go to somewhere eles like the diagnostic school where they can give him the help he needs. All the kids that stay at teh school are put into other classrooms in the school and then some of them stay there for a year get the help they need and return to regualr school. I've been doing excelent there because I've been clean from all substances for 23 days and I'm taking my prescribed adderall and don't need help in any of my subjects at all except for algebra 2 and I'm doing great with it. You also really should take him to a private neuro pyschiatrist to test him for learning disabilities let the school do it too but then deffinatly take him to a private one of your choice because the ones in the schools really arn't good at all. I know this from my experiance and my educational advocate. Good luck with everything...how old is your son by the way and if you live anywhere near MA I can provide you with my educational advocates number she is deffinatly the best you can get, she's known all over and graduated from Boston University for pyschiatric nursing and got her masters in education from Harvard University. We have Saxon math in our elementry school here. Try Math made easy videos w/workbooks. This is our sons best subject and he loves it too.Rachael38469.2691782407Ahhh, showing work....what garbage....
unfortunately I'm TOO GOOD at math... amazing infact but I continuously failed......because I didn't show work...
when other kids had calculators I'd finish the test in my head and just
write down answers....people either thought I was cheating or
something...and even if they saw me do it since I wasn't using 'DUE
PROCESS' and doing every step and recording it, it wasn't right..
Screw process, a right answer is a right answer.
Call Path this a free group for parents with kids with disabilities.Iq scores : our son is at 6-7 year old level when in 2nd grade. We are retesting end of next year 4th now that on medacine. We have to this is the 3 year evaluation. My feer is if he passes the test he still isn't ready for Taks tests.
No, if you have arranged for him to recieve disabled student services with the school.
I'm still having problems in math and I'm a senior.
thank goodness I'm allowed to use a calculator for my supposed to be EASY assignments.
I get so frustrated that I just give up in the middle of class and draw.
