What?? | ADHD Information

He's not too keen on modern technology or medicine I take it. I have always had a problem with organization. I would buy heaps of calendars, reminders & organizers for school and work and even THOSE would become unorganized.

I sometimes wonder if age causes the problem to increase in frequency. I am 33 now, and I admit, also out of shape & not eating right, but my memory is even worse than as a teenager. It seems the problem has become twice as bad. Perhaps if I excercised and ate well like I did at 17 I would have a clearer memory. Back then I could sleep for 12 hours straight. I still had strange interrupted sleep at 17, but longer sleep. Now I am lucky if I can sleep 6 hours.

I'm not disputing what any of you have said. I'm in total agreement!! In fact, I think he could do himself some good searching the internet; he may learn something. But there's one thing I'm curious about. He referred to ADHD/ADD as a 'disease' or illness? It is a disorder, isn't it? Not a disease, right? Do any of you think of AD/HD as a disease? Although dis + ease, we do experience some unease, that's for sure. Or is it all a matter of semantics? Oy!

And of course the number of ADHD diagnoses has grown...since they now realize you don't outgrow it, and there are all of us adults who are finally being dx'd! Had they known when we were children what they know now about AD/HD, the numbers would have flown off the charts by now, and probably would have been considered an epidemic and now.GypsyWomyn38443.4968171296Under the "by the book" definition of a disease, I suppose AD/HD can be considered a disease:

"A pathological condition of a part, organ, or system of an organism resulting from various causes, such as infection, genetic defect, or environmental stress, and characterized by an identifiable group of signs or symptoms."

That guy is still a quack though. Continually referring to AD/HD as a "disease" only furthers his negative image of it.

I personally don't think of it as a disease at all.

Thank you, bcgirl. And I also don't think of it as a disease. In fact, as some of us have stated, it's even perceived as a gift.GypsyWomyn38443.502974537I took a look around his website, some of the emails he answered, etc. Relax, everyone, this moron can't even use  correct grammar and punctuation. He's obviously not too bright, and probably trying to make a case for himself by being overly opinionated and controversial. We know what our problems are and what helps us. Whether or not ADD is a "disease" is only a question of semantics. People like him aren't worth our time or consideration.

That is so funny!  When I was reading it I was wondering how he's made it thus far!

Ok, this may be a little late in coming, but I'm sorry, it MUST be said:

THE "DOCTOR" WHO DID THIS WEBSITE IS OBVIOUSLY AN ILL-MANNERED, UNEDUCATED, IGNORANT, AND UNINFORMED JACKASS WHO DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THIS SUBJECT TO EVEN HAVE A DECENT CONVERSATION ABOUT IT.....

If this "doctor" was at all in any way informed about ad/hd, he would not even be posting this website...

THE FACT THAT HE EVEN HAS THE AUDACITY TO DO THIS WEBSITE PROVES JUST HOW IGNORANT AND UNINFORMED HE IS ON THE SUBJECT...

THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME VENT ON THIS..

SINCERELY,

I am not good at talking to people. The words never come out of my mouth how they are in my head. Constant ridicule all my life to "straighten up and act like an adult" have made me introverted and complicated the matter further. In school I was fairly a good kid, but told I never listen and follow directions and even put in one or two "slow" classes. After a year or 2 in the slow math class after school, the teacher was amazed at how much I actually knew than the other "slow" kids.

The people I called were pschiatrists. I will try to buckle down and keep calling. Someone has to have a sliding scale also. My rent is like 1 whole paycheck : (

Well if we had all been beaten more frequently and much more harshly, we of course wouldn't have any signs of "DISEASE" and would be "NORMAL" and fruitful members of society instead of sitting idly by and daydreaming.......

Oh wait was that sarcasm? DAMN RIGHT IT WAS!!!

This guy is rediculous Time to retire him before more people begin thinking like him (my brother being one) or better still..... FIRE UP THE WOOD CHIPPER.... FEET FIRST SO WE CAN WATCH THE LOOK ON HIS FACE!!!!    Of course we know being hacked to tiny bits by rotating machinery is not a true medical condition either now is it......

I'm with you, LSD!!!

When these guys say things like this so adamantly, I kinda wonder if there isnt something they are hiding. Like his kid has adhd. And instead of diagnosing, beat him on the behind or yelled at him every time he turned around and to admit that the kid had adhd would be to admit that he had done some crappy parenting- instead its easier to not only blame the kid, but blame the entire industry. Or maybe a parent did, and he's mad at his stepmom and its better to make her look like the bad guy than admit there was a problem etc. Or heck, maybe he just has no freakin clue.    I found his site when I was doing a search on metacrawler search engine for timers & alarms for people with ADHD.

There are two kinds of doctors in the world, Old school and New School. He seems very old school, spare the rod spoil the child type. I have a hard time beig convinced by anyone who makes money by having an oposing opinion of the norm. Think about it, he can be hired by all these parents who want to sue and make a profit.

I bet he doesn't even believe what he says.. but think about, its quite the proffitable scam. I mean, how many other doctors can make such a absurd claim and still show thier face. Though I believe he will get the uneducated to consider his court diagnosis.

He is the very same reason I can't find testing for ADD. Every time I call an office and ask if they do ADD testing they say things like "what is the age of the child" and I say it's for me and they go "uhhhhh we don't test adults". Then they make a snide remark such as "what makes you think you have ADD?" Other places tell me they only test for "true" mental illnesses. I am about to throw my hands up in disgust. And the comments at work...the comments like "there is nothing wrong with you. ADD is just an excuse" I have no support whatsoever. I thought Florida was progressive.

What a shame that you have to deal with this.  What will they do with children who have ADD that grow into adults?  Cut them off??  You are no different really.  You've probably had symptoms all of your life but weren't fortunate enough to be treated.  Their logic is crazy.  I just found out at the age of 43 that I have ADD. I've always pretty much known it was likely but I just never did anything about it.  In the short time I've been on meds, actually immediately, I could see a big change.  It's a total blessing.

My dad is 73, and now he is going in to be checked.  I think a lot of my symptoms rang true with him also.  It may seem crazy to start this late in life, but hey, if it helps him, I'm all for it!  We live in Minnesota, and are lucky that there seems to be a lot of help available.  They actually run quite a few Strattera commercials on TV that specifically appeal to "Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder".  Don't they show those in Florida?  Have you tried calling other offices than the one that rejected you? Also, have you called a psychiatrist rather than a General Practitioner?  I do think that a psychiatrist is the way to go.   No offense to General Practitioners, but they just don't seem to take mental health issues as seriously, and they don't seem as knowlegable on the drugs, at least here they don't. Best of luck to you!  Keep on trying!

I read the article and considered writing a comment for him.  However, then I thought that he wasn't really worth my time.

I'd keep trying to find someone who diagnosis adult add.  I wonder if Florida has a doctor's referral service.  It's a service where you call them and tell them what kind of doctor you're looking for in what area, and then they give you the name, phone and educational backround of the doc.

Although I'll admit to being fairly smart, it is practically impossible for me to study and learn anything without taxing my brain to it's limits.[

I think that some people equate ADD with being a little genius (Einstein) - it's almost a feather in the cap of a parent to have a child with ADD.  Some adults may think like this too - having ADD means you're just a misunderstood genius.

Very true Yellowdog! My 5 year old daughter, who has been diagnosed, as we have been told by her teachers, is able to grasp and understand concepts that were meant for children a few years ahead of her. The problem being that if they had'nt had the time and understanding to work with her one on one, it would never be known. She has a hard time conveying the information back, especially in writing. Although A question she can spit out the answers verbatim.  I was the same way although no one knew what ADD was at the time so I was viewed as "lazy" or a "daydreamer". I really did try and I knew the answers but unless I had a real interest in the course of study I could care less and lacked the focus I needed to suceed.

Ha ha Eliza, you're too funny!!
Nowdays, it seems like every second kid has ADHD or that it is being used as a label for the so called "bad parenting". Bad parenting has now been labelled attention deficit disease.

Those of us who are older, are having a hard time trying to get a diagnosis at all!

Just thought I'd share that with you all, what do you think?

Those of us who actually have it know that without treatment it is often a very painful disability.

In the end, I guess the diagnosis doesn't really matter except to the extent that it helps a person to improve their life.  I wonder how it would benefit someone who didn't really have it to get diagnosed with it - I don't really see any long term benefit for them in doing that.

yellowdog38446.7424884259I think this old fart is an absolute hoot!  Actually he is saying that ADD is NOT a disease (and we know it is not a disease, it is a disorder...very different!).  Seems this old crock can't tell a disease from a disorder!

Even scarier is the link in the upper RH corner...protect your kids against mental health screening...my word...just glad this old coot no longer practices medicine.  I can just imagine if he decided that cancer was not a disease and posted a link arguing against screening.  Bit like Thabo Mbeki stating that HIV does not cause AIDS...hmmm...maybe we could organise an introduction for these two nutters?

Does anyone here want me to hack his site LOL?

He's quite sexy. I wonder if he's single?

On a more serious note, I went to my family doctor today and we were talking about why no one ever diagnosed any of my problems. No teachers ever picked up that I had ADD, or my parents for that matter, or the 15 different psychologists they sent me to.

No one ever diagnosed me with Tourette's Syndrome, even thought I had extremely noticeable facial tics most of my life. I went and got myself diagnosed at age 18 after figuring out for myself that's what it was.

My doctor's feeling was that around the late 1970s there was a big trend in psychobabble theories that most problems to do with children were the result of bad parenting, not genetic factors.

If the kid was crap at school, or a social reject, then it was the parents fault for being a bad parent, rather than the kid having a genetic 'defect' (for want of a better word) .

In my case I was adopted as a baby, and when I was little, it was thought kids didn't have ADD, so all my tics, and other problems were thought to be a result of trauma from adoption, and later bad parenting, rather than the more simple explanation that I inherited ADD and Tourette's Syndrome from my biological parents, and no amount of good or bad parenting was going to make me stop having the symptoms.

Nowdays, it seems like every second kid has ADHD or that it is being used as a label for the so called "bad parenting". Bad parenting has now been labelled attention deficit disease.

Sounds like he's a fraud!
Most people who claim that statement are so called strong Bible believers.
Just a little note of input here: although most people who believe in that kind of crap that doctor was talking about may be "strong Bible believers", I just want to point out that not all "strong Bible believers" believe in this approach to ad/hd.

Just a little food for thought, that's all.

sonya_h38444.4316203704A lot of Dr.'s say adult add/adhd doesnot exist.Spanking to me should be a last result. Most people who claim that statement are so called strong Bible believers. They believe rearing kids the bible way is how we do things. You can discipline all you want, some will do things the way they want regardless. They have to learn the hard way. I called this is the strong wild child read about it.Some you can't cage regardless. I met a parent who made there kid live in there room 3 months with nothing put a pillow. Gave them  a idea of jail. They are much bettewr now.

I went to the website, what a crock of sh*t!!!  This guy is the ultimate quack....

And my husband wonders why I don't want a gun in the house!!!!!!

I would like to give my twopence worth on this freud claim. The way i perceive and
repond to the world around me is not real, so it cannot be measured, observed.
what a terrible, cruel, inhuman slur on us who have this profile. Once again the
internet spawns a man with a theory that is not a truth or a lie but a clever guise
to sell his unaccepted ideas for money to people guilible enough to buy into them.
I am saddened that quackery is still taking some of us in so easily. I am once
again having to justify my very existence because of this man. I had hoped that
by this stage that the proof accepted by leading researchers, acedemics and endless
numbers of witness type input from intelligent, astute and respected leaders of
different sciences, not the pawns of drug cartels, may have silenced such as this
individual's unsustansiated ideas.
