need help for sleep!!!!

Hi

This is my first time here and I haven't had a chance to look at all the previous posts so I am sorry if someone already answered this type of question before!!!

Anyways, I have been taking adderall for the past year and was also taking sonata as a sleeping pill because I couldn't fall asleep (even if I took the last dose of adderall at say 4pm). In addition as I am in graduate school and have to work long hours in the lab sometimes I have to take doses as late as 9 or 10 pm.

Recently I realized that the sonata sleeping pill was having the side affect of acne. So I stopped using it but then couldn't fall asleep! That wasn't good so I tried the OTC sleeping pills like diphenhydramine (ie benadryl) which knocks me out for sure but also had the effect of making me groggy and out of it the next morning.

I heard that strattera and clonidine/ guafericine can sometimes be helpful in sleep problems. Has anyone ever tried a combination of a stimulant such as adderall in the morning and something like strattera or clonidine in the evening?

Please let me know of any suggestions or experiences you may have related to this problem!

Thanks

YES!  My son who is 8 years old, is on adderall and straterra.  It makes a big difference!!  Not only with sleep, but helping him get out of bed and motivated in the morning.  He is in bed usually by 8:30 pm and when its time to get up, he dresses himself.  I used to have to fight him to get him dressed and he would stay up til midnight because of the adderall induced insomnia.  We are also using the straterra to kind of wean him off of the adderall, and hopefull before too long we will not have to use the adderall anymore.  His pediatrician is Board Certified in a Pediatric ADD type specialty.  He says that the combo works really great.  He said that they also commonly use Blood Pressure Meds to help children, and adults come down from the adderall.  The straterra is working in that way.  He has us taking the straterra at night.  As well as that being a good combo, he said he doesn't believe in just taking a child off of Adderall, "cold- turkey".

I am an adult with ADD, I am on adderall and Effexor.  The effexor helps me with that sort of thing as well.  I no longer have any problems with insomnia.  But, there are side effects with the effexor that you will have to be willing to take on, even though they go away after a month or so.  I say try the Straterra first and let us know how it works for you.   Or whatever you decide to do.

hey. thanks so much for your suggestions. Hopefully someday I can try strattera too. So what ended up happening was that yesterday I saw the psychiatrist and asked her if I could try strattera at night but she told me that it wasn't a good idea for me to try something new like that right now because the adderall works so well for me and as I am going through candidacy for my PhD soon, we both agreed that messing around with something that serious at such a crucial time could be a potential disaster! So she gave me this antidepressant, trazadone, which also has side effect of somulence and I have to agree, it definitely knocked me out! Unfortunately I felt really dopey the next morning so its probably not the perfect solution but I guess I am gonna stick with it, at least until candidacy is done and I can experiment more with different drug combinations. In fact, she also suggested that I switch to concerta later on because it might not be as bad for insomnia as adderall, or perhaps wellbutrin. But I am scared, adderall was such a micacle drug for me that I would hate to have to stop using it, but who knows maybe theres something even better! Anyways, this is getting long, if anyone has more ideas, I would still love to hear them....

Please don't pump kids full of meds with strange sideeffects...

Efexxor is for depressions only...watch out for that..sometimes it amplifies the moodswings...

Try herbal alternatives first, like valerian root or something

I am 13 and i was on Adderall and i was having really bad sleeping problems. So my doctor put me on Strattera and i started sleeping good and getting up good in the morning to and i go to bed at 10:30 and wake up at 6:00 in the morning. I am never drowsy and i am doing fine now. hope you take what i say into consideration!! hope you do better soon!!

Its been a while since I have written. Turns out I stopped taking the trazadone because it was giving me a "hangover effect" in the mornings and I couldn't handle it anymore so I started trying out different herbal supplements. First I tried Valerian root which was kind of OK but what I found to be best was melatonin tablets.  Even with 35 mg adderall during the day, I can still fall asleep! I'd highly recommend trying melatonin for anyone whos having sleeping issues because its a pretty natural way to fall asleep and doesn't cause you to feel groggy the next morning.Heh, I was about to melatonin melatonin.  Your body naturally produces melatonin, so its pretty safe to take. When I was first given Effexor, I reacted quite badly. (I had a
zappy brain and nausea.) My doctor took me off it right
away--I'm fortunate that I have a family physician who listens. I
then did my research on depression and came accross a
natural remedy that is converted into seratonin. It is called
5-HTP or 5 Hydrotryptophan, made from a seed. I presented
my research to my doctors and they agreed to let me try it. My
physician and therapist monitor me closely as I take both
5-HTP and dexedrine to manage both my depression/anxiety
and ADD. 5-HTP doesn't make me feel dopey at all, just calm.
There is a caution though, don't take the 5-HTP without your
doctor's knowledge because it does intensify the effects of most
anti-depresants.Hello, I'm brand new here - this is my first post. I'm a 40 y/o woman and have been diagnosed with ADD. At first I was treated for depression. One of my problems was that I'd wake up at 2am or 3am and not be able to go back to sleep every night. So I started taking trazadone. It made such a huge difference! I actually started sleeping straight through the night, and don't really have problems with feeling groggy.
I'm also taking strattera - 60mg every morning. I started the strattera when I was finally diagnosed with ADD. I'm about to go up to 80mg because I still have issues of feeling overwhelmed by the thought of cleaning my house, and the thought of papers at work. I also am still dealing with spending issues. Does anyone else have this experience?
You may be the only person on earth who can take trazadone without a hangover :-) Be happy.

As to the other part, I'm not sure what you are asking? Are you saying straterra doesn't work or it causes you anxiety? I have a very low opinion on Straterra but I'm not sure it's a good idea for everyone to jump on Amphetamines, they tend to be rather demanding. But you sound like someone who either metabolizes well or poorly (an extreme) To not have side-effects from sttraterra is unusual.

So maybe adderall XR would be better. They do have a program where the first month is free. (You have to get the script and the Shire coupon card from your doctor, or maybe it's on the Adderall XR site) Go right for the 30MG strength and by breaking them in half you will get either all day and night coverage or 2 months worth.
my son taks concerta during the day and the clonidine to help him sleep i tried benedryll like the dr said but it ididn't work.Effexor is bad news stay away from that if at all possible.

My son takes Straterra/Adderall XR during the day.  We use Melatonin for him at night - 1 mg tablet.  It works well.  Otherwise, he'll stay up until 11pm or midnight before showing signs of fatigue or simple tired-ness.

I was diagnosed as "hyperactive" as a child in the 70s and took Ritalin for years.  My suspicions of adult ADD were confirmed a couple of years ago, but I lost the H somewhere along the way.  I remember taking Atarax at night - a little blackish-green pill.  I thought it was for sleep.  Does that sound familiar to those of you who were treated for attention deficit in the 70s?

Have you ever heard of Ambian? I'm taking adderall 20mg 3 tmes a day, but I've always had insommnia. I had tried everything for sleep, and nothing worked. Before I was DX'ed w/ADD, I was put on Ambian 10mg before bed and if I wake up in the middle of the night I was told to take a half.

Thats been about 8 or 9 yrs ago when it first came out. The T.V commericial says "for short term use" but it is addicting. I have blood work done every 6 mos. and everythings fine. It can't hurt to ask.(If you haven't found something by now)!.
