What do you listen to while working? | ADHD Information
Ringing telephones, office chatter, the sounds of
traffic going by, more ringing telephones, the buffoon in the pink
shirt trying to do management speak down the phone, the stupid jingles
of various mobile phones (get this guys, you can't play
Wagner on a Nokia), birds outside the window, the mechanical
'whirrr-clunk' as the coffee machine dispenses another cup of sludge,
clattering keyboards, ringing telephones, slamming doors, etc
etc.
LMAO! Just clicked over to Mark's homepage and read "The Trouble
With Me." http://www.the-vagabond.com/ Classic!
Perhaps you should try some [paid] writing or, God forbid, a radio
show? BTW, plenty of parallels to my own life but I doubt I'll
ever be able to write it down quite like that. Good stuff!
I said "the chatter in my head" which is mostly true. I am able to log into AIM and Yahoo IM at work, so I spend most of the day talking to my boyfriend on that, LoL. I usually forget to listen to music, and I have a habit of singing...and no one wants to hear that, LoL. But I also work in a call center, so I can hear the people on the phones...a few really loud people....and that drives me nuts!! (I do telecom/IT work at the CC, and most people in a similar position have an office here...but a few of us are stuck out on "the floor")
I wanted to do a more well-though-out set of poll questions; I may try and revise later but these should do for now.
For myself I work primarily on my own [80%] but am fortunate enough to
interact with numerous others outside of the home office for the
remaining 20%. I'm a "glorified draftsman" and the 80% of my time
is spent with various CAD, drawing, or modelling software. My
office is a sort of self-imposed sensory deprivation chamber:
roughly the size of any corporate cubicle; but is enclosed and has a
door.
Over the years I've gone back and forth allowing myself to work with
music or some other background noise. In the early days while
surrounded by others and random office noise, I convinced myself that
the music helped limit distraction. Funny thing though, I've
always felt a pang of guilt: as if I'm not giving my "full
attention" to the work at hand.
I'll add more detail to this later; time permitting.
My job is composed entirely of mental tasking - music, and especially talk radio, distracts me very much.
Of course - the chatter in my head distracts me just as much, probably more.
When I was working as a production word processor, I would listen to classical music, using headphones, otherwise I would have to listen to all the people gossiping, chatting, laughing, yelling to one another over their partitions, etc. when they should have been silent and doing their work! All that should have been heard was the click of keyboards, but - ah alas, it didn't work that way.

Suppose that should be one of your poll choices....listening to co-workers!
I may have posted elsewhere that while I was typing, I would feel like a concert pianist! It was

. And even while I was listening to the music and doing my work, I was also listen to the buzz, voices, conversations, etc. in my head. Guess I'm definitely a true multi-tasker!

No wonder I never get anything done.

Mark Goode38447.4299189815The stuff Mark Goode said is what happens in my office. Add in 3 radios from different cubicles all playing a different genre and I am ready to pull hair out..sometimes not my own.
