disorders and origins? | ADHD Information
OK, I think I'm a little confused on this one, so if someone could clarify I'd appreciate it.
From what I understand, certain disorders- like adhd, are wired into the brain in the womb. Others, like post traumatic stress disorder, develop as part of a person's personality (?) due to an event or series of events.
But, what I'm confused about are the disorders that some people say are present before birth and others say you can develop. Like bipolar disorder, for example. I saw in a recent book that said someone had developed it as a result of living with severe learning disabilities. Also, that people have OCD, and then no longer have it later (like they used it as a coping mechanism during a difficult time). Or, it appears in some cases depression or anxiety are hard wired, and in others they develop in childhood as the result of exposure to something.
Which ones are present from birth, which ones do people develop that are permanent, and which ones are applied only to certain periods of peoples' lives?
Thanks--I have been trying to read about causes of ADHD. It says that researchers aren't exactly sure, but it can also be caused by environment. If that is the case, then I had pneumonia at age 3, in which my fever was more than 103 degrees farenheit for several days. I had always wondered if it fried my brain just a little, even if subtley. It's a thought. Another thing...I was an only child, adopted and raised by older parents who were too old to run and play with me. I had an awful lot of time on my hands to create my own dream world. Another factor perhaps? My parents didn't like the idea of neighborhood kids coming over to our house so I had to keep myself busy alone by myself almost all of the time. So, are you saying that its possible that I am genetically predisposed to adhd, but might not have gotten it if factors in my life had been different??
Man, I'm gonna KILL whoever made this happen!!!!!!!!!
I think it is all of the above. Environmental and physical triggers need to be present for some of these disorders to appear. Some are thought to be affected by diet and body chemistry. There is also a belief that some people are predisposed due to chromosomes and others might have the full blow disorder because of the some chromosome factor. There is just to much the Doctors, Drug Companies and Researchers still don't know. Because of what they do know we have everything you listed. They just don't know what chromosomes or othere physical factors along with environmental factors need to come together to get a particular outcome.
Fragile X syndrome is a perfect example of a know chromosome disorder. If the repeat of a certian chromosome is between X and Y you don't have the disorder. if it is between X and Z you are thought to have a percursor of the disorder. If it is Z and above you do have the disorder.
There is a lot of Genetic testing going on but it could be decades before they find the Chromosomes that are involved in the disorders you listed. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is another disorder where they are doing genetic testing. It is proposed that the there is some chromosome abnormality and if all the factors come together such as a critical developmental stage in the infant and some other physical/environmental factor along with a genetic predisposition Sudden Infant Death Syndrome will occur.
Hope this wan't to technical. I do alot of reading and understand most of it but sometimes I'm not to good at explaining.

My mom had her appendix removed when I was still in the womb (5 mos along). That cant have been a good thing. Nowadays they dont even want you to take advil or drink much coffee when you're pregnant. Can you imagine what having your appendix removed (anesthesia, blood loss etc.) would do to an unborn child? Turns out there wasnt even anything wrong with it, either!
