I *think* I may have ADHD

Hi everyone

Something has been bothering me since I was a small child, in School I had the following symptoms:

  • Impulsivity - total inability to engage brain before doing a task, 0% planning ahead or consideration of consequnces
  • Someone who rambled incohernetly
  • Early developmental disorders, mainly speech (and terrible handwriting)
  • Inability to listen or take part in a structured lesson
  • No organisational ability
  • Extreme difficulty in keeping to any kind of lesson plan
  • No or very low confidence, often felt better in a peer group of 'weaker' or less able individuals
  • Extreme fear of fighting, I used to get chased a lot but would never ever stick up for myself - I was petrified of even smaller children at times
  • Poor social skills
  • Hand/Eye coordination low - I often needed to convince other children to help me out with scissors etc  This unfortunately led the teachers and therapists to believe I was just being manipulative and lazy
  • Only thing I loved, and still love is computers
  • Hyperactivity
Later on my speech improved massively and so did my English and Maths skills, so much so that I was considered genius level in both for a while.

Nowadays most of the traits are still evident to some degree (some more than others).  Whilst I've also developed other traits, such as a high sensitivity towards noise (I have to leave a room if someone is clicking a pen on the other side of it, for example).

I am sorry for the large size of this post, just wanted to make sure I got all of the detail in.  Hopefully now at 24yrs of age I can perhaps resolve to try and get some sort of treatment, as I feel this is holding me back from being successful and confident.  I know I have ability, I just need something to help me unlock it and focus.

Thanks in advance for any replies :)
KevInSweden38453.2255439815Go to the library and check out all the ADD books you can. Read up and schedule an appointment with your doctor.

I'd go one step beyond just talking to your regular doctor. Make sure you find somebody who understands how to diagnose and treat adult with ADD.

Here's a link to an article about how to find professionals who understand Adult ADD.

Exactly. However, go to your family physician first and see what they say. Some insurances require that, others don't. Then go from there. Until then, read up and ease your mind, good mate.
Thanks a lot for the replies both of you.  I will heed both of your advices, and try to find out if I do indeed have this.

I'll see if I can order the book I have seen mentioned on this board "Driven to distraction" from Amazon, as I doubt the libraries here in Sweden carry it (though it's possible!)

I'm going to the Doctors for a routine appointment on Friday, so I will mention this to her to see if their is anyone I can speak to about it.

Going to check the links out now, before I go to bed.

Well yes you need to make sure that the person is accepted by the insurance company and you follow the rules.  But, it's a good idea to do your homework 1st even before talking to a pcp. Many times they will refer you to somebody who claims to understand adult ADD but does not. I have hear way too many horror stories about  this and even experiences it 1st hand myself.
