Bad Adderall, Bad Adderall | ADHD Information

I was put on Adderall 2 weeks ago.  5mg/day with Straterra as an afternoon dosage.  Within 2 hours of the Adderall, I had chest pains, I thought it was gas and I continued for 5 days,  I started having sharp apains, so I stopped. One week later, I was still having chest pain (mild).  I finally told my doctor and I was rused to the ER where they did ekg and an Xray and monitoted me for hours. I was released with no diagnosis other than the Adderall was stressing my heart and since it was an extended release it is still in my body.  Also my body could have been addicted and it was suffering withdrawl.  None the less, I am still having the chest pain that did not exist before adderall and I am on my way to see a cardiologist.  Just wanted to let you all know that it is not for everyone and to be careful.  Bad for me too.  Well, I had different side effects but still, it was enough to make me go off it.  Dry mouth (which I get from all the stimulants), headaches, and well, it seemed to dampen my uh...drive.  If you catch my drift.  I went off the stuff.  Sorry it didn't work out for you either.

None of them are safe if you do not suffer from that particular type of ADHD, wich the drug countereffect... and you propably does not understand that scentence, so I will try explaining.

There are many types of neurotransmitters and regulational hormones in the body wich could be at low limits, and then symptomize ADHD. Adderall is a stimulant producing both Dopamin and Noradrenalin. If you do not suffer from low limits of noradrenalin, and you get a stimulant, your body will sureley be tuned to a fight and flee situation. You muscles will be stronger... including the heart... and your breathing might be deeper and such... And that sure is not healty in the long run.

did your doctor make you get an ekg before adderall was perscribed for you?  I've been on it for about a year and a half and my doctor recently sent me for an ekg to make sure that I didn't have any heart problems because adderall was apparently causing death in some people who had existing heart problems.  my doctor also told me that it should only last 12 hours, then be out of your system.(some days I wish it was longer!)

susan, my sister (who goes to a different college than me) was telling me about some guys that said they were going to steal another guy's adderall and sell it because it's basically like speed.  I joked that my brain must be really backwards if being on speed makes it more normal.  (obviously, it's not really like that because it's only a small controlled does.)  but I do think that being on medication doesn't mean anything about your mental health, it just means that your brain is wired a little differently than everyone else's.  I think that if it helps you, then you should take it.  People with diabetes take insulin to make their blood sugar normal, why shouldn't you take something that helps make your brain chemistry normal?  Also, medications affect everyone differently and you have to find the right combination that works for you.

I'm actually taking a class called Psychology and Christianity this semester and we've talked about people who don't believe in psychology and medication.  it's really sad that people like you have to suffer because of their misunderstanding of scripture.  I think that psychological research is a great gift from God and I know that my life would be terrible if I didn't know why I am the way I am.  I'm glad that you've gotten the help that you need and maybe can help other people who may be suffering the way you were to realize that God wants them to be well.

Seriuosly it still shocks me that doctors aren't doing the basic monitoring they are supposed to with these meds. Of course if your doctor just prescribed meds cus you told him you have add and want to take (fill in the blank) med then that should immediatly send up a red flag.

What happened to ruling out all the things that have symptoms that are similar to ADHD. What happened to blood tests and ekg's. ADD isn't like the flu if you went to the doctor and were diagnosed in one visit then something is wrong with that picture.

I'm not saying that to anyone specifically obviously I don't know what happens with you or your doctors but I see it so much on these boards. The post always starts out the same I went to the doctor the other day cus I think I have add he gave me _______ medication to try.

I swear this whole damn world is insane. < =""> Hello - again

I am sure being hooked up to monitors and such was scary, scary, scary. I don't want to belittle that experience.

Nonetheless, have you considered the possibility that your were anxious about taking a stimulant medication in the first place, therefore your anxiety caused your physical symptoms?

I have had very severe anxiety attacks; I know severe anxiety can cause physical symptoms like a racing heart and unexplained pain.

I also know I personally was VERY apprehensive about taking adderal xr, because it is a stimulant, and because my social connections just a few years ago consisted of a [legalist] church culture which denied ADD existed and preached against any and all forms of pychiatric meds.

I was therefore "conditioned" to believe I was somehow almost sinning, or at least failing in God's eyes, by seeking medications to treat my depression, anxiety and (upon diagnosis) ADD.

It's quite the about-face to go from denying the validity of a medical condition to taking a narcotics-class medication for the same condition.

The fact is, I was in denial for years, and was NOT functioning - I cried out to the Lord and, through a very special revelation, was led to feel totally at peace about taking meds for my mental-health needs. It was a very liberating change in my overall self-perception.

I am still trying to figure out my exact medicine needs, but the Adderal helps - A LOT. Only I skip a night of sleep, very easily, at least twice a week. That can't be good.

My doctor has given me another med, Risperdal, which I am not very good about taking. My husband thinks if I took it as prescibed I wouldn't have the no-need-for-sleep problems. I was prescribed a small dose of Risperdal for anxiety, but it's also prescibed (in a large dose) for schizophrenia. Admittedly, I think that's why I am hesitant to take the Risperdal. Deep down I am thinking "if this helps me, what does that say about the true state of my mental health?"

Again, I am not belittling your symptoms, or telling you to try Adderal again. I am only sharing what I have learned about myself, and how I see what MIGHT be a correlation between your symptoms and what I know to be symptoms of an anxiety attack.

My husband also has some mental health/anxiety issues and he, years ago, would get chest pains and such. We even called 911 once do to the severity of his pain. But it was only stress. He wasn't on any meds, so none could be blamed. If he had been on any meds, we very likely would have blamed the meds. It was only 20/20 hindsight, recalling the stress levels in our lives (especially his) when the chest pains happened, combined with my later experiences with anxiety - which I had properly diagnosed - that made us come to realize that he had been experiencing unexplained symptoms - mostly chest pains and increased heartrate - due to severe anxiety.

Praying for You!

Ritalin had worked for me in the past but I wanted something that might not give me headaches.  Adderall has made me feel HORRIBLE these last two days.  i am not taking it anymore I think.  I am dying for this to get out of my system.

Strattera can be given at night instead of at daytime so try it with your med.No stimulants will I add for him he is 52 lbs at 9. I will not allow the side effects to effect him. I would rather have No med than use them.I hear people say effects appetite. Why are they used if causing not to eat. Not good to me.

I started taking adderall about a week and a half ago. And I have had a lot of different experiences. First of all I was worried about chest pains. And I think that is normal to worry that speed is going to make you have heart problems. There is a lot of psychology involved in all of this besides being ADD. So I started by breaking a 20 in half and then just taking a piece of the half which would be about 2 1/2 milligrams. Then a couple of hours later I would take another quarter and repeat the same a every few hours. Initially I got a high from this as I wasn't used to the drug. It was a good high, but I found myself hoping to get the same high each time and each day. And the effect was just that I was more aware and much more focused on things. Which is really good. I found myself taking care of business that I would normally put off for ever until I absolutely had to get it done. For example my books for my business. I am currently up to date, which is crazy, because I have never been up to date. I will do anything to avoid that task and wait until December when I absolutely have to get it done to give to my accountant.

Anyway, I thought that maybe I would up the dose to half of the ten and then the other half a couple of hours later and then another half of ten. I did that when I wasn't working just in case, so I wouldn't get weird around anyone. And that made me completely sick to my stomach and it took me 2 days to recover from that. I was also feeling like I would never take it again, because it made me so sick. But today, I took it the same way that I did when I started out and I felt fine. And I was focused on everything that I needed to do and I didn't feel like a zombie that had no personality, like I did when I took too much. The bottom line is that I think that your body will tell you exactly what you need if you listen to it. And it isn't for getting high, it is for getting things done and focusing on what you need to focus on. I think that is why so many people have trouble with XR, because if you take too much you have no control. It last 10 hours like it or not, where the regular generic brand is good for about 4 hours and then you take some more if you need it or not. I think that our bodies know how much we need and it seems that from what I read, some people are taking such high doses that no wonder they are having problems.

Anyway, that is my 2 cents, and I have had no heart issues and where I would normally be the type to have anxiety very easily I seem to have lost my anxiety since I have been taking this. And I was very worried that since it is basically speed that I would have anxiety much more easily and I am finding just the opposite. But I can tell you if I took a whole 10 mg or a 20mg I would probably flip out of my mind, because I would essentially be overdosing.

I guess I'm the oddball of this group because Adderall XR 20mgs has been great for me! I feel awake, aware, alert, energetic etc and I LOVE IT! I don't think it means you are an odd ball, it just means that you must need that much. I think your body makes it clear to you by way of side effects. When I don't listen there is hell to pay. When I listen it is great. My psychiatrist won't start anyone off on a high dose. She starts you off on 10 mgs for a week, then bumps upto the next dose and so on until you find what works best for you. Just shows you how different we all are - I take up to 80mgs/day. No problems.

I have to Agree with you.It is doctors like this that make people not take those of us who have been properly diagnosed seriously.AngryAngry

I mean,I was diagnosed and on ritalin as a child and I still had to go thrrough over 5 hours of nero psc. testing to be diagnosed as an adult.

What is wrong with these docs that will diagnose in like 20 minuts without any testing.  GRRR.
