Husband with ADHD | ADHD Information

Hello everyone, just been reading through all the posts trying to get info about my husband who was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 18, but has not been treating it -- said he was put on Ritalin and he did not like the effects of it, made him extremely sleepy.

We have been having extremely bad marital problems and I am just realizing that it's probably because of his ADHD.  I really didn't know what it was all about until I started doing some research on the web and all the symptoms fit him to a tee.

He has had bad susbstance abuse problems with narcotic pain killers, coke and alchohol.  He has slowed down a lot, but I'm constantly wondering if he's "on something" and I cannot stand it.  I am so frustrated with him.  He has been laying out of work going on 3 weeks now, say's he can't sleep at night; therefore, he doens't want to get up in the morning.  It makes me so mad because he gets up finally in the afternoon around 3 or 4 and then wants to run here and there after I get home from work.  We have 2 sons and I do it all - I have no help from him what so ever.  I have to do all the housework plus take care of our 2 small boys (2 years and 7 months).  I tell him I want him to get out, but he want go anywhere, just lays around all day.  He keeps complaining about a stomach problem (thinks he has an ulcer) and that's his cop-out for not working everyday.  We just started talking about his ADHD yesterday and he knows he has it and said he would go to counseling, so I'm working to get him into that before I give up on him.

If anyone has any suggestions for me, I would be very appreciative.  I need all the help I can get with him - I'm at the end of my rope!!

I'm glad he's agreeing to go to counseling. That may help him a lot. It sounds like he could be suffering from anxiety (stomach discomfort) and depression (sleep problems and general lack of motivation) in addition to the adhd.

I know you said that he was put on Ritalin some time ago and didnt like the side effects. But, there are several more medications out there now that may not affect him in the same way and that many on this board have found to be extremely helpful.
