Adipex weight loss drug and ADD

I have Adult ADD and about 3 weeks ago I started taking Adipex to lose weight. Basically, Adipex is an appetite suppressent with a stimulant. Almost immediately I seemed to be able to focus much better and it has remained that way for 3 weeks! SAAAWEEEEET! Today, I went to the Psychiatrist for the first time and she officially diagnosed me with Adult ADD with some possible underlying bipolar. I told her about the Adipex and she said that it was stimulant, therefore, it was working like some of the ADD drugs. Huh, who woulda thought it. I have to quit the Adipex for the Strattera now though. Dang, and I had dropped 15 lbs in 3 weeks too. 15lbs in 3 weeks wow that is great.i need to get some of that.lol.Have you ate at all in 3 weeks?

Sandra

I took stimulant weight loss drugs after gaining a ton of weight on Effexor for depression.  I remember feeling so much better on the stimulants too.  Didn't at that time even suspect ADD for me.

I've been on Prozac for a Long time.  It's helped some... but, of course, didn't suspect ADD until about 3 mos ago.

What has been your response to the new drug?

Yep! I just eat a heck of a lot less now! A fruit n' grain bar for breakfast and then I'm not hungry again all day, it's really weird. You get to a point in the day though, usually around lunch, where your body tells you it needs something and that's when I have a Lean Cuisine or something like that. Then I'm stuffed until dinner, where I eat a chicken breast and some veggies and then I'm stuffed until morning. I haven't exercised at all either and I still have lost that much weight.

New drug as in Strattera? If that's it then I haven't had a response yet because I have to let the Adipex get out of my system. I will start Strattera on Sunday.
Shock, I'm curious how you do on Strattera, which, you may be aware, is not a stimulant. Keep us posted. (You lost a lot of weight in a short period of time! ) Anyway, if you find you are gaining weight on strattera, talk to your doctor, they may have you try Concerta, which is a mild stimulant, and on which you may lose your appetite. I am losing weight on Concerta even though I'm eating well. But good that you eat anyway...fuel for the brain. Good luck!GypsyWomyn38457.4580787037I'm sure you must be disappointed but OTC weight loss stimulants aren't regulated the way prescription ones are. They have a high abuse potential which means their effectiveness wears off and causes you to take too much.

Go with what your doctor says. Trying to medicate yourself usually ends in disaster.

15 lbs in three weeks is a lot! I don't want to lecture, but what you are eating doesn't sound like much food. This must come to less than 1000 calories a day. If you keep that up, you will start losing lean muscle mass along with the fat (and don't think the fat will all go first - it won't). Then you won't have as much muslce to burn calories, and your metabolism will get screwed. And then your body will start hanging on to fat for dear life (fat is stored glucose - the body's primary fuel), and will start shedding even more muslce mass.

All this won't happen in three weeks, but a prolonged diet such as this will have serious consequences down the road.

Oh, I didn't know the weight loss pill would do that. I was completely unaware.

The foods I do eat are high in protein and I also do some early morning weight lifting to keep muscle. I also have a little girl I'm always carrying around and that builds muscle too. :)

I lost weight because I'm a fatty :)

The doctor said that the Strattera would kill my appetite but I need not worry...probably because I'm a fatty.
John, I'll have to disagree. I think there is need to worry. I don't care if you're overweight (like me!) or not. If you don't eat well during the day (whether hungry or not), your body and brain will not get the fuel it needs to cope with improving any ADHD symptoms you may not like, like motivation, even if you're on meds. The meds don't do it all by themselves.

If you're doctor told you there's not need to worry, I'm sorry they didn't stress that it's important that you eat. My pharmacist highly recommended that I eat lots of small meals, even if I'm not hungry. And it's working! I'm losing weight and getting the benefit of my meds. So, hopefully, you are looking for help with your AD/HD, and will let the weight loss come naturally from eating well and often...and perhaps from your self-esteem improving.

Okay, Shock, I'm done lecturing.
