for the ladies,,, PMS and meds | ADHD Information

Share
I don't actually have PMS.  Guess I'm just lucky.  I have been doing alot of reading on Bipolar as my daughter has just been diagnosed.  There is some interesting stuff on hormones and the meds for bipolar that sounds alot like what you are describing.  It is alot harder to medicate a girl for bipolar when she is going through puberty and a woman during certain time of the monthly cycle because the hormones have effects on how effective the medication is.  I have not seen any such research on ADHD but it would make sense.

I was wondering if any of you ladies have had trouble at the time of your perids with your meds not working?

My concerta was starting to help with my anxiety, yelling at the kids, focus ect. But when I have PMS,,,, WATCH OUT WORLD! It is almost like the meds aren't working at all, and might be making me more agitated. How do I explaine this to my male,,, old man doctor!?  All of his other ADHD patients are kids or men!

What is up with this?

I don't know why, but I think when I started meds my PMS got way worse, and my meds didn't seem to work then either.  I wish somebody would do a study or something on this because I'm useless for a day or two a month.  I can't do anything but lay on the couch and eat chocloate and forget talking to people- the littlest thing will make me burst into tears, so I just only go out when I have to and try not to talk to anybody.

Come on people,, haven't any of you had this trouble? Please post if you have. I want to have some amo for the doc this Wednesday.

I chose not to take meds just to see how long I can do things on my own, for my own reasons. However, I don't get mean right before my period, I get more assertive. goldenmoment38460.8452546296

AD/HD meds are affect by women's hormone levels. They do become less effective during that part of a woman's Cycle. Patricia Quinn MD has done some great work on AD/HD and hormones.

The books:

Understanding Women with AD/HD and Gender Issues and AD/HD both discuss this.

Patricia Quinn also did a presentation about AD/HD and hormones at the 2003 ADDA conference. CD's and tapes of it can be ordered at www.add.org/store
