ADHD in school | ADHD Information
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, as to how to work with children with ADHD?
It depends on the age of the child. When my child was young
(preschool and primary), I would always work on getting her
attention focused on me first. I would touch her shoulders with
both hands and say her name followed by "look at me".
Eventually she learned that this meant I wanted her to pay
attention to me. You also have to keep things very simple and
direct. Its important to be firm but dont forget to be kind. And, if
the child is also hyperactive, keep your expectations
reasonable, and remember to keep them safe. The good news
is that your patience and guidance pay off later. These kids
can succeed in school and socially as long as you believe in
them and give then the support they need. Praising the good things they do is the most important thing. The most
common thing ADDults complain about is lack of self esteem from
constantly being told they are no good or stup[id as children.
While there are lots of things that need to be done in schools to help
kids overall we all get thru and know how to read do math etc. It's not
the lack of academic ability that hurts us as we bounce from career to
career it's the horrible self image and constant second guessing that
is holding us back.
If they know what they're doing and it's right DON'T disturb them at
all cost, til u have to. Also be patient and try to work with them the
best u can.
I'm not sure of the age, but when my son was just learning his ABC's we would play go fish with ABC cards. He thought we were playing a game, but he was learning his ABC's. I always had to make everything a game with him and when he thought it was a game, he wanted to play. The same with his numbers and colors. It worked for us.
