Thats really actually very responsible of you, although driving yourself around would prolly be a help to your mother...just take it slow, get used to the commitment on backroads. I didn't get my license 'til I was 19. I told everyone I just didn't have the money for a car, but really I didn't feel like having that responsibility either. I may go through a lot of brakes and have, admittedly, lightly bumped a few things, er, cars...BUT to my, and all other ADD'ers, credit...at least we KNOW we need to be very attentive on the road and make up for this. Other people don't care...and I think that makes us just as good as anyone else on the freeway, ya know? BTW, I still drive the same car... its still in great condition and I've never injured anyone...knock on wood!
Good luck, you'll be fine.
I had the same fears, so I waited until I was 17 and able concentrate better on the road. I still had some close calls, but for some reason driving is more hypnotising than sitting doing tasks. Make sure you never drive tired because it has a much worse affect on us.The constant humm of the tires...the wind noise...the same song on the radio for the umpteenth time...the same dead deer in the road...same trees..same highway patrol in the same spot..oh crap am I speeding? yes hypnotizing indeed.
