Adderall Weight Loss | ADHD Information
I am currently taking Adderall. The problem is that I keep losing weight. Is there a way to take Adderall and not lose weight. I have recently lost alot of weight. How do I gain it back and take the medication also? Any suggestions?
Hi! you must be a tiny person to be worried about losing weight...I am small too, and had the same problem when I was on meds. (i'm not on them right now cause I am pregnant...)
how long have you been taking it? i'm not sure about adderall specifically, but i know for some meds, the first few weeks you take them they may make you lose your appetite, but then after a few weeks of taking the meds regularly the side effects wear off, and your appetite starts returning to normal.
If you keep stopping and starting the meds, your body will not get adjusted, and it may make your appetite go all over the place (i speak from personal experience, namely with wellbutrin and strattera ). But like as i mentioned, i am not familiar with Adderall, and am not sure if this drug would react the same way, but I do know that lots of drugs, especially stimulants, have simular reactions...(strattera, however, is not a stimulant).
Eat good, even if you are not hungry...gotta blender?>>Try ensure milkshakes. (put ice and the drink in the blender; and be sure to get name brand ensure, because the generic sucks!!
) Not sure what else to suggest, but try taking a multivitamin and stay well nourished..
also, just want to add, you may give your doc a phone call and ask him for suggestions, also, he may want to keep track of your weight, and he may have other options up his sleeve for u to try...
sonya_h38472.6169212963Hi. When my kids were put on Concerta, mostly my daughter went through the serious weight loss. We had to really work at it. I talked to her doctor about it.
I would suggest you talk to your doctor and see what he or she reccomends to gain more weight according to what would be best for you, given your health record and all that goes with it. They'd know best.
That was also one of the reasons I hesitated to get on meds myself. I don't need to lose any more weight. I would vanish and I've worked hard at making sure I stay away from being a size 2 and 3, because it was too thin for me. My son lost weight too but not as much and it didn't really become a problem but I got worried for my daughter there for a bit. About a month after we spoke to the doctor we fixed that problem. He made suggestions and they worked.
Adderall XR here.. lost 8 pounds (!) in the first week of it.. now weigh 142 measly pounds at 6 foot 2.
I talked to the doc about it.
I am a very thin, tall person with a small frame. They call that the
"Ectomorph" body type. I loose weight if i eat normal.. on the Adderall
XR, i don't eat normal as i am simply not hungry.
I am solving this with intense exercise and a VERY high protein diet
(including two protein shakes per day, no veggies, lots of meat, etc).
The exercise is 100% weight lifting, and lots of it.. 5 times per week
for an hour.. it's been about four days of this now and i feel
ENORMOUSLY better.. i have also gained about 3 pounds back in those
four days, all in muscle mass.
And thanks to the Adderall XR, i am actually managing to stick with it for once :)
The downside is that i have to really watch what i eat.. as little fat
as possible (between 10% and 25% of total calorie intake is from fat)..
and i take about 6000 calories per day. Also very high carb (this is
what you burn during exercise.. if you don't make sure you get lots of
carbs your body will burn the protein, which is meant to gain weight by
building muscle, and not as energy fuel). Next to that, i take Creatine
(supplement to help muscle gain, and thus weight), Glutamine (speeds up
metabolism as well as increases the use of protein), three times per
day multi-vitamins and an extra dose of magnesium (helps with the ADHD
as well as the muscles and heart). I had to increase my food intake as well.. doing six meals per day now.
I had lost most of my 'energy' while i was on the Adderall XR before..
but now that i actually work out extensively, i feel like a new man!
(and hey, i already gained 3 pounds and i definitely feel more in shape
and stronger.. doc says that in 16 weeks i'll be toned quite nicely)
Hemmie38473.1002777778Eat after meds wear off and eat a lot of high calorie or fatty
foods. I lost weight for about the first month but then leveled
out. You have to force yourself to eat but it's not impossible.
I lost a lot of weight when I started taking adderall, but as my body adjusted my appetite came back a little bit. I still eat really slowly and can't eat much at once, but I'm hungry every 3-4 hours. I've always been pretty tall and thin, so I couldn't afford to lose much weight either.
I haven't really been able to put the weight that I lost back on, so these suggestions are great. Do protien shakes really make a difference? I've always loved carbs so that's what I usually eat. I pretty much quit eating meat when I went to college because I didn't want to risk my life with the mystery meat in the cafeteria so now I don't really want it.
I lost a lot of energy on addreall since I dropped my dose from 30 to 20 mg/day. Taking multivitamins has helped, but I'll have to try more protien and exercise. I haven't found any exercise besides yoga that I don't get bored with though, and I'm pretty sporadic with doing yoga. Has anybody found a good way to motivate themselves to exercise regularly?
Protein will only make a difference if you exercise, protein builds
muscle.. and to build muscle, you need to work them out. You will also
need LOTS of calories per day to maintain the exercises.
The simplest way is to simply get a couple of dumbells (i use two 20
pounders for my at home work out).. they're actually one of the most
versatile ways to exercise.. i have about 50 different exercises using
them that train all muscle groups in the body.
I know people of my body type who went from super thin to cut in 16 weeks using what i described in my previous post.
I motivate myself by looking in the mirror :) I have the advantage to
know what i CAN look like i guess, having served as a special forces
soldier for four years.
Also, drag someone along in your exercising.. it's always nice to have someone else there to talk to.
I also have a TV in my bedroom so i watch shows i like while i am doing it or i listen to a few cd's
