Good ADD foods.... | ADHD Information

I've heard adding omega 3 foods to your diet is helpful. I've been eating flax seed every day for about a year- not sure if it has helped or not. I sure hope so, because it tastes nasty!!!

I grind up flax seeds into a powder and sprinkle it into chocolate soy milk.  Omega 3s and protein all in one.  And the chocolate makes the flax seed tolerable.  I also abstain from most processed sugars, flour, pasta, etc.  Go to your local food co-op or a Whole Foods if you're in a decent sized metropolitian area.  They'll have plenty of better sugar, flour, pasta, and rice.

There is a brand of breads called Natural Ovens (out of Wisconsin) that has a variety of whole grain breads, muffins, and bagels.  Their stuff is high in Omega 3s.  Most of the grocery stores in my area stock their stuff.

Thanks to a recommendation from Duncan on this forum, I have started taking L-Tyrosine supplements.  I get them from my GNC store.  They are supposed to have an effect on your dopamine level.

Be warned, most of these suggestions will have a gradual, cummulative effect.  No change overnight but you should see an improvement after a few months time.

I'm sure this has been mentioned somewhere on these boards, however, I don't have time to search.

What are foods we should eat to help us with our ADD...and what foods should we avoid.

Thanks!

hmm....good question! lol. Wish I knew what foods would be good for our ADD selves.

I think I remember reading to eat plenty of proteins, like meats and stuff and try to avoid too many simple carbohydrates, like pastries and lots of breads.

You can do breads, just try to go for the whole wheat breads, and stuff, and just don't eat so much of it it..

in other words, similar to the south beach diet. (that was what I read in an ad/hd book before they even came out with the south beach diet, it was just so similar, i thought I would mention it...)

I've heard that a high protein low carb diet works for AD/HDers.  The Omega fatty acids are supposed to help - like salmon, trout, and other fish oils, and flax seed oil.

I've also heard b vitamins are good. Personally I've never noticed a change in my symptoms as a result of changing my diet. But even if it doesn't help with add eating good and getting vitamins helps in other areas of your life and health so it's usually a good idea Pizza!!!!!
Pizza!!!!!
The universal food!!

I LOVE French Silk French Vanilla soy milk...don't knock it 'till ya' try it, but my son has referred to it on occasion as "teradactyl crap".

I love seafood and sushi. I stay away from tuna--too concerned with mercury levels, and red meat makes me feel yucky. I also don't think red meat is that great but that's just me.

I eat dark green leaves/salads and sometimes the fresh dark green spinach leaves for my salad mix. I love a good Ceasar salad.

If I eat heavy I feel kind of dumpy, however, my kids wanted pizza today so I had some and poured hot sauce on it and love it.

I rarely eat junk foods as I just don't care for them BUT, look at how I suck down the Mt. Dew.

I take vit B & vit C and sometimes other vitimans.
Big t-bones washed down with hot black coffee do wonders for my mental state. Multi-vitamins are a must on top of decent healthy food. Also, magnesium supplements are great (it's proven that many people with ADD/ADHD have magnesium deficits and that magnesium helps the concentration to a degree (it is also very good for your heart and muscles)).

Food-wise, it depends a LOT on your type of body. I personally eat 6 meals a day, make sure i get LOTS of whey protein  and high carb as well as work out regurarly.. however, i am a thin, tall guy and weight loss comes VERY easily.

If you're overweight you still need the protein but less carbs, unless you do extensive workouts (carbs are burnt during workout).

As for food types, just eat healthy.. even high carb, high protein diets like i do can't be MacDonalds every day (too much fat). Basically i was told by the dietician that 10% to 25% of total calorie in take (in my cause 6000 calories per day) may be from fat.
