Does this sound like ADHD? | ADHD Information
See a general doctor, they are much cheaper than the specialists. Mine cost like 0. Just make sure they are knowledgable with ADD>wow 0 bucks for a regular doctor thats almost as much as my shrink lol
Call your insurance company and ask them for a psychologist/psychiatrist that they cover that specializes in adhd testing and treatment. That's how I got my psychologist. I've been very satisfied with the treatment and since he's in my insurance plan, much of it has been covered.
I'm stuck with a little bit of dilemma since I just recently moved to Pittsburgh so I don't have family doctor. I searched on WebMD for physicians specializing in ADHD. There are several close to my apartment so I think I'm going to start there. I do have health insurance but I don't know what its policies are or what it requires. I just really can't afford to go to several different phyciatrists I know they are extremely expensive, I don't know how much it is with insurance though. I also was curious, how much does it cost just to go to the regular doctor( I havent been in years).
It all depends on your health insurance. You may end up paying only a copay for the office visits. But call your insurer first. Many plans require you to start with a primary care physician before you can move on to a mental health professional who then may refer you to an ADHD specialist. Also, your health plan may require you to stay in their "network" of physicians. If you don't follow their procedure you could get stuck for an entire bill that would have been covered. So call them ASAP. You'll probably be on hold for a while before you get to customer service but you should eventually get through and then thoroughly pick their brains for what is covered under mental health.
And now you all know why I got out of the insurance industry, it's too complicated for someone with ADHD.

LOL wow addbec glad I don't live in your city

Well up until recently I kind of just thought I was a stressed
out and a little bit of a spastic person. My mind is in a 100 different
places at once, I feel like I have a million things to do but for some
reason I can't get myself to begin getting one thing done. I
cannot focus on hardly anything, I will sit down to do homework
and I wont even be able to get started for a couple hours after
staring at a blank word document. I don't sit still..ever, my friend
once told me that I was always interrupting, which I found hard to
believe until I realized I was doing that and it was hard for me to
control. I've always been like this though, until recently I
thought it couldn't be changed and then I did some researching on
ADHD. I wasn't a very impulsive child but I specifically do
remember my first grade teacher insisting on me going to get a hearing
test. She actually thought I had a hearing problem, I told my parents,
I just can't listen, I can hear just fine. But I was never evaluated or
diagnosed
with ADHD. I got by in high school by taking easy classes, mostly art,
but I graduated with a 2.0, now I have just started college and it is
getting worse. I have four hour classes! My mood swings back and fourth
all day and by the first hour of a class I'm driving my self insane and
I can't stop shaking my leg, yea I'm doing it right now and I've only
been sitting for 10 minutes. And my gpa has dropped
to a 1.5. Can you just go to any doctor to get treated for ADHD??? I
need some advice.

sounds familiar
Do you have health insurance? Sometimes health insurance rewuires that
you get a referral from your primary doctor to see a psychiatrist who
can test you to determine if you need meds and/or therapy.
Doctors can prescribe meds, but usually this is done by a
psychiatrist...I think. You should see a psychiatrist for evaluation.
If your psychiatrist does not seem receptive- some people still dont
diagnose adhd often- especially in adults, find one who you feel more
comfy with, who you think is listening to you when you talk about your
symptoms.
Sounds like
AD/HD is a definite possibility, especially since your innattentiveness
was noticed by a grade school teacher. A childhood history, diagnosed
or not, is crucial to an ADD diagnosis.
Your fmaily doctor is a good place to start - that's where I started.
You will probably get a referal to a psychiatrist for evaluation and
testing.
In the meantime, take a look in your local library or bookstore for
"Driven to Distraction", by Edward Hallowell. He's a doctor with AD/HD
hmself.
Good luck!
