Hi all,
My 4 yr old was diagnosed with ADHD today.  He had 8 of the factors for Hyperactivity and 4 of the six for Attention Deficit. I have had a feeling he was for a while, but was scared to have him evaluated. He starts Pre-K this September, so I want to give him the help he needs to concentrate and thrive in school. I have chosen no meds for now, and we have an appointment with a psychotherapist on tueday 5/10. I need all the help I can get from those of you who have been there. Thanks so much to those of you who respond:)

hi, i'm redhead i have a son 9 that has add and aspergers he is on 36mg of strattera he responds quite well to the medicine, he was diagnosed at the age of 4 with add we've been through so many medicines i often felt is the medicine worth it, but it really is for him. can i ask why you choose not to give meds for now? how are you going to manange the addd without medicine? sorry for being so nosey.... my daughter was diagnosed with the hyper end of adhd, and i'm considering taking her off the medicine she was given but i'm a little scared.. nice to have you on the forum. I have read soo many negative stories on adhd medicines, i want to research it before I have the docs give him any. Its the paranoid in me. I'm gonna start researching it right now all I can on ADHD so I can have a full view on it. I am praying the psychotherapist can give me some tips as to how to handle the adhd without the meds for now. If in the future he needs them, then by all means. Thanks for responding:) hello, i'm sheri.m and i have 2 children who are adhd, sarah is almost 17 yrs old and she is taking strattera and then there is dillon who is 3 yrs old. sarah is more ADD were dillon is more ADHD.... he is taking trileptal and risperdal. i wish you luck with what ever you decide.. when we first found out sarah was adhd i didn't put her on medicine at first, her grade were really bad, she couldn't sit still, she would jump from one thing to another, she never finished anything. then we put her on medicine and things seemed to change. with dillon i knew something wasn't right from birth but i waited until he was 3 to have him tested as for now they have said he has adhd but couldnt rule out bipolar.. welcome Thanks Sherri for responding. I am still iffy on mediating it. For one thing, they are not 100% positive he has full blown ADHD, his diagnosis is still open. He has about 80% of the signs for it though. I hope the pyschotherapist can give us a few tips on how to handle it. His hyperactivity gets worse, whenever there is company.  I know for some kids it works wondes! My son is at a mild stage because if he is having a good day, he will listen to me and behave, and his temper-tantrums will not be soo bad. He has never hurt himself, thankgod. We are thankful we are seeing a psychotherapist on tuesday 5/10, I am sure he/she will be able to help us. I also want to try vitamins, allergy testing, and therapy. I am still in shock, actually. ylwaller i understand your fear on medications for i am nervous about them myself.  I am taking it one day at a time, my daughter is 5 years old and is not on anything at this time.  She is seeing a psychologist by early July I think, darn wait list.  I plan to try vitamins and therapy to start before anything else.  Medicating is a personal choice as well as each situation is different.  I met a women at the park and our kids were playing and she told me her son was on meds and before meds he would bang his head on the ground and have bad tantrums and that the meds had saved him.  That got me in a better positive thinking mode it does wonders for most kids.
