Why do meds stop working? | ADHD Information

wife believes it's because you are in a learning  environment that is not how you learn. These meds will work on concentration only. School believes that if you medicate that solves it all not really. Read please what Pat wyman says about medacines on her cite. How to learn .com.Wife agrees with what she says. In order for all kids to learn they need to be shown in the way that works for that person. All teachers will do what works for the majority. Some will do more but usually not most.

Akk!  this is a bunch of misinformation.  The amphetamine class has the steepest/fastest tolerance curve of just about any drug.  Your son has developed a new physiological setpoint that takes into account the additional dopamine and nor-epinephrine levels in the brain induced by the adderall.  Try a combination of anti-oxidants and wellbutrin ( dopamine re-uptake inhibitor) for 10 days then cycle him back on.  My personal experience is that Wellbutrin solves the focus issue for me, but not the motivational one, although things are improved.

As usual, high doses of fish oil might help as well.

good luck

My Dr says sometimes your body gets used to it and you need either a higher dose or a drug holiday. You might want to call the Doctor to get his advice. Good luck. When we started our 7-yr old son on Adderall XR, it was great.  He was focusing like crazy and getting things done.  But 2 months down the road, its effectiveness is waning and  spotty.  Does this happen to everybody, and with all meds?

Yes.  This has happened to me.  I started on 10mg which worked fine.  Each month, I had to increase the dosage by 5mg to maintain the effectiveness.

I tried the drug holidays, but for four days at the most which didn't seem like sufficient time to reset my liver.  I am planning on staying off Adderall for two weeks to see what happens.

I guess there really isn't a full-time method of correcting ADHD.  The best solution is so far just a 50% fix which is better than nothing I guess.

Yes, I rather feel 50% better than my 'normal' self. Also after drug holidays, usually you have to go through all the med side effects again. No fun!

iF THE DRUGS STOP WORKING ISN'T THIS THE SAME THING GOING ON LIKE ANTIBIOTICS. THE BODY  BECOMES IMMUNED TO IT SOUNDS LIKE TO ME. Caffeine, Citrus, Nactine effect absorbtion rates. Try avoided these except with dinner helps also. Enzymes helps digestive system also. Raw  Vegs/ fruits.Doesn't it feel better when you have it less often? Heh. Oh Jesus.

The ADD/ADHD meds which are based on methamphetamine, such as ritalin, Adderal, Concerta, likely stop working for some, for the very same reason that speed freaks have to keep taking higher and higher doses - the body is either acclimating to the drug, or getting more effective at removing it, since it is a poison.

Speed junkies also become more scattered the longer they take the drug, and so the higher and higher doses do seem to give them some focus.  After coming off speed, such as in rehab, a very noticable lack of focus sets in, as the brain is depleted and it's own regulating mechanism is suppressed.

After a break from the speed, the junkie usually notices that he/she can get a good buzz off a smaller dose than he/she was taking before the break.

This mechansim is also true for alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, exstacy and heroin and sex.

This mechanism can also be observed in lab rats.

What? so I'm supposed to have sex LESS often to make it better...

well that just sucks... no two ways about it...

I think I may be experiencing the same type of thing.  I started on Cymbalta approximately 6 months ago.  I felt great until three weeks ago.  I think it's great that I have not picked up a cigarette with a drink, because I haven't drank anyting either.  The med has been great in that respect.  However, I have been feeling a sense of guilt, because I have been smoking a little pot recently.  This despite the fact that I'm doing better each month business wise.  I really do not have a lot to be discouraged about.

I had a great day yesterday for example, I closed 4 deals in one day.  I chose to smoke and relax yesterday, and I'm repeating it again today.  I wasn't doing this for months, when indeed, business was more of a struggle.
