Regarding psychiatric disordersThe one good thing that I have learned from my new psych classes that I recently finished is that science is striving through dna analysis to pinpont these disorders. I refuse to call any of them diseases. That hopefully some day in the future b reading the dna we will have conclusice dx on disorders such as these as most are genetically predisposed. It can't be done now but look back 10 years and HIV was totaly fatal in a short amount of time...as was cancer... now we are beating those disease with treatment .... there's no cure yet but we aremanaging them.... who knows what can happen in 10 years from now.
Kristy In response to the otbursts earlier in this forum.... ADHD is both a physiological and psychological disorder in most cases. Therapy can not fix it alone. In most cases there is a problem with seratonin or dopamine receptors and their reactions as well as problems with the neurotransmitters not being present in ample and functionable quanities. There are some cases where the dx can be done with a scan but there are times that the brain appears normal because it is a chemical imbalance. In my son's case the chid was born 8 weeks premature and therfore was robbed of precious inutero brain development. I am sure that there would be evidence on a scan for him. Is schizophrenia a made up disorder to make rx companies money? How about depression? If that is so then I guess I am a puppet to that one as I am depressed. How about bipolar? Most of these are undetectable through scans and are dx through a set of nown symptoms. Maybe some day there will be a conclusive test for ADHD but there is nothing now that is absolute. There is a lot that we do not yet understand about the brain and the way that it functions. We are all unique people with unique DNA and fingerprints. Our brains all work diferently and therefore for every case of ADHD depression or any other psych disorder we will all be different in what works for us. No one wants to take a pill every day to be functionable but we do or give it to our children in order to allow them or us to be everything that we can be....kinda sounded a little army motto there.....
Kristy Very well said, Kristyolk! i agree with you that yes add/hd is a chemical imbalance of the brain,
but dr.s have said that depression and bi-polar are also chemicals
imbalances, do you believe that? i think as far as schizophrenia is a
genetic disease that is horrible for a person to have. don't get me
wrong i'm not trying to argue, just simply state what i've come accross
in one of my old abnormal psych. classes. what about blood tests? do
you think that one of those disorders will come up in a blood test? i
don't think it would---because my son had a blood test and he is
aspergers high functioning autism and that wasn't dected in a blood
test, i hope someday it will be seen. for that matter i hope they find
a cure for everthing.
