Problems waking up? | ADHD Information

oh yes!!  I'll stay up all night to make sure I don't miss an early morning flight (i've missed to many).  I too have several alarms--and can fool everyone into thinking I am awake in the morning--then go right back to sleep and not remember waking at all.  y'all think this is ADHD related??

Oh--I got a dog  in part to wake me up in the morning but he's as sleepy as I.  Now that I've had him for 7 years, I'm real glad I've got such a laid back dog.

I can't wait till this "Clocky" is mass marketed:

Oddly Enough - UK Reuters  Alarm clock set to wake doziest of sleepers
LONDON (Reuters) - Can't get out of bed in the morning?

Scientists at MIT's Media Lab in the United States have invented an alarm clock called Clocky to make even the doziest sleepers, who repeatedly hit the snooze button, leap out of bed.

After the snooze button is pressed, the clock, which is equipped with a set of wheels, rolls off the table to another part of the room.

"When the alarm sounds again, simply finding Clocky ought to be strenuous enough to prevent even the doziest owner from going back to sleep," New Scientist said on Tuesday.

That is a real improvement !!! Hey MIT! Put me on your list of Betas!
What is funny is my husband has a double alarm clock ......
I have 2 alarm clocks also and I also set the alarms on the moble phones and ocasionally, if its very important I get up on time I  get a wake-up call from the opperator.

Even with all of this I have been late. Its so bad that I have often stayed up all night so as not to be late.

Lately, I've been setting my dual-alarm clock for 45 mins before I want to get up and the other alarm for when I need to really get up.  When the first one goes off I reach for the adderall and glass of water that I set on the end table the prior night, take the pill and go back to sleep..   Since I've started this ritual, most mornings my eyes spring open about 5 mins before the 2nd alarm goes off and I bounce out of bed like a kid on christmas!

Works for me pretty well.

That's a great idea!!

Great! I'm not allone here. I try to set at least 3-4 alarm times and try to
set them randomly between a certain time span. I also place them far
away from the bed and turn them around so that i cannot see the time. At
least the third ring gets me into some state of panic that drives me into
real live. But if it is really important i ask some friend to stop by and raise
h- to get me going.

I hate waking up!  Although it is usually days I go to work or doing something I don't want to do...LoL

But I have 3 alarm clocks, each with 2+ alarms.  And I can sleep thru 2 hours of buzzers, my dogs jumping on me, and my house being blown away! I have tried moving the alarms across the room, having people call me, making the alarms loud....nothing works.  I can convince myself of anything as long as I can keep sleeping.   What I have found that helps me...I keep my Concerta by my bed, the 1st time I wake up, I take my meds.... And I have an easier time getting my butt out of bed.

Funny story... my dorm roommate and I had the same class freshman year in college.  So final exam day...she's getting ready to go to the exam.  She tells me to get up or be late... I looked at her like she was totally nuts, told her the exam was cancelled, how could she forget what happened.. Apparently, when we had gone to the exam and saw the prof in handcuffs, being hauled away by the grammar police for a bad essay he'd written for the paper....yeah, that was all a dream! I was SO sure it was true at the time, I was dead serious with what I thought had happened....LMAO...it's still hilarious.

LOL
I can tell you the (more or less) opposite... I had an important exam and i
had to travel about 45 minutes to school every day. There was only one
bus in the morning to get me there. So I decided it would be best to sleep
at my friend's house near the school (in walking range). I told him that he
really has to wake me up and that he shall better pour some icy water
over my face than leaving me home.
Of course... i missed the darn thing. My friend came home and i got all
mad at him and he told me that he did wake me up and that i was talking
to him and very thankful and all, so he got off. I remembered that
conversation at once but i honestly thought it was a dream because i was
so scared of the exam.
Ok, I hosed it again, but the really bugging thing was that i was so unfair
to my friend.
But if i remember now, i really have to laugh at myself. And my friend
never took it personal.ADHiDsBest38483.5243865741What is funny is my husband has a double alarm clock and I call him from work to ensure he is up since he works evenings.  My daughter same deal I basically dress her while she is asleep and even when she is awake because she has difficulty focusing.                             I remember when I was a child, I had a very hard time waking up in the morning.   I would tell everyone "I am awake, leave me alone".  Though I am much better at it now, I am not sure what I could recommend.... But if I had to, definitely start changing her diet with reducing sugar, simple carbs, have more protein in the diet, and see about getting her a supplement that is good for the brain like a very Omega3,Omega6,Omega9 combination like Smart Oil.  I take something called GABA which is good for the nervous system and I heard it is good for sleep..... You can look into that...

Have had trouble getting up for most of my life.   I think my natural body clock is set to be awake at night.  As an adult I started having terrible sinus problems and someone suggested having a sleep test because I always feel tired.  I had it a few weeks ago, they put all kinds of wires on you and you sleep in a room while being monitored.  I did find out I have moderate sleep apnea and go at the end of the month to try one of those breathing machines.  I met one guy that said it was like a miracle when he tried one of these machines and has been using it for a few years.  I don't really feel like this is my problem but will try it and post a message later how it worked.

:cough: Um...  :cough:
I'm the same way.  When I absolutely must get up then I can be up and out of bed up to an hour before I need to.  My dad actually taught me a method of self-hypnotism to help me out, but I can never remember to do it on a constant basis.  ^^;  Aside from that, I actually get better sleep during the day than at night.  At night I could sleep for over 12 hours and no matter how much sleep I got, I'd still be tired.  I also have a lot of trouble falling asleep at night.  During the day I fall asleep easier, sleep deeper, and wake up more refreshed.  My mom says I was pretty much like that since the day I was born.  Or the night I was born.  It was 3:44am.                     Recently, I have been sleeping much better.... I can actually now easily get out of bed and sleep like a baby.   Before I used to wake up like a zombie.  I remember as a kid, it would take my mind half an hour to function after waking up:)  Lowsugar levels are the cause. We all need breakfast for this reason. You have not eaten for a while so that's why.

Re: the Clockie:  I don’t think it would be maddening—maybe not the first few time!

I have a programmable coffee maker too, that sometimes helps—knowing the coffee is already ready (make sure it’s got an automatic shut off that will prevent how having to go back home to make sure you turned it off!).  I also have a lamp with a full spectrum light bulb on a timer that comes on about 30 before my alarms—I don’t think it helps anymore—I’ve gotten used to sleeping through all my alarms, lights, radios, fire sirens, smoke detectors, TV’s.

PS—the full spectrum light bulb gets REALLY hot and if you’re asleep and try to turn if off and miss the switch and touch the bulb, you’ll get a HORRIBLE burn (that lasts for a month at least) and THAT will wake you up!!

Every 3 months or so, if I don't move the 3 alarms to a different location in the room I will get into a sleep-walk type state and turn them all off. I then get to work late. I have been thinking of making an acrylic box with holes to padlock so I can't hit snooze & leave key in kitchen.

Over the past 10 years I have devised other plans to wake up. The best yet that seems to work (but have to change it around every 3 months) is this:

A clip-on floodlight aimed over my bed plugged into a light timer set to go off 1 hour before wake up time, TV timer or radio timer set to go off 30 minutes before wake up time, then the 3 regular alarm clocks set to beep and various different times around the normal wake up time. This seems to work best, but change the times, & locations every 3 months or you will start sleeping through it.

someone on this board made the best suggestion.

KEEP A COFFEEMAKER NEXT TO YOUR BED. When your alarm rings, turn it on. press snooze. when you wake up the next time, your coffee is reday and you're still in bed.

BRILLIANT!

hate to admit that I have not gotten around to try it

That alarm clock should not even be given to the worst people in hell!!!
It sounds so maddening!!!!!!!!!!!1
I remember trying the two alarm approach.   In general, I wake up just in time for wherver I need to go, unless I went to bed extremely late.... But sometimes in the past when I would wake up, I would be like a zomby and trip over something while trying to shut the thing off..... I used to look at the alarm clock as the thief of my sleep:) Wow, thanks for all the feedback. I tried the coffee method and that worked like a miracle, but I had never drank coffee before and I got hooked. Is it bad for you to drink too much?Well, people often tell me that i should drink less coffee because it is not
good for my health. There surely is a point to it. But having tried to toss
it, i feel like not drinking coffee is even worth for my health

The best suggestion I got was from my sons pediatrician.  He told me to wake my son up 1/2 an hour before he needed to get up and give him his medication then (Adderall XR 10 mg).  It worked like a charm.  When I went to get him up he would pop out of bed get dressed and be ready to eat breakfast by the time I had it prepared.

Because I was having the same problem I did the same thing for myself.  Set my alarm for 30 minutes before I need to get up.  Have my med and water on the nightstand ready.  Take it when the alarm goes off.  By the time 30 minutes rolls by the meds have kicked in and it is easy to get out of bed.  My only problem with this method is that I get up at 5:30 AM that means my meds are wearing off about mid afternoon.  My doctor gave me a booste of regular Adderall to take then and that solved the problem, when I remember to take it.

Coffee helps me. Can't get out of bed without a coffee. Im a grouch without it.

Thanks wife!

I worked in a hotel once and lived in staff accomidation. There was a fire and the firebrigade stoped outside my window sirens blaring. Each room had its own alarm which was deafning. I slept through the whole thing.

I am in the same boat. Ever since I can remember I simply couldn't get out of bed. I went to Vegas and SLEPT at night! COme on!!! I tried to tell myself that it was all about sleep cycles and mine were being interrupted for some reason. Now that I have an 8 month old baby I have no choice but to get up. It really sucks but I do it anyway. There are times I get up and am still sleeping. I am perfectly coherent as to what's going on but I'm still completely asleep. Who knows. Strattera didn't help any. I can tell you that much from my experience.Well, in my situation, I can't wake up on workdays without an alarm, but on weekends I pop out of bed at 5 am for no reason. It's very irritating to have to wake up by an alarm. I set my clocks (note I said CLOCKS), all three of them ahead at least 15-20 minutes, and I set my alarms to wake up at least an hour too early, because I know I will hit the 15 minute snooze button every 15 minutes until that hour is up. Then I jump out of bed at the last possible minute fearful of missing the public bus and end up running halfway down the street to catch the bus. No time for morning food, no time for much of anything..just running.Usually it takes me at least an hour or two after the alarm clock goes off to get out of bed.  I've always had the hardest time getting out of bed in the morning, no matter how much sleep I get. It bothers me because I'm a grouch in the morning and I'm constantly late for things. Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone know how to help?

I bet this will work for me!!! I used to be able to wake naturally by outdoor sounds and the smell of the air.

hey all,

Do you guys have a tendency never want to sleep at night on time and never wants to get up in the morning?  I do.  I would watch the hours go by just vegging on tv and couch at night knowing that I should be going to bed so I could get up in the morning.  My minds says I need to do this but always never end doing it until I'm dead tired.  It's constant cycle.

It seems like the alarm clock doesn't really matter at all since I keep hitting the snooze button.  Unless it's something EXTREMELY important, I would have panic wake ups after the alarm goes off.

But can you really attribute this to ADD?  I think if you really put yourself in a habit of just waking on the alarm no matter what  then the problem should go away right?

Speaking of being late for things, I once missed a cruise cause I left late.  I felt so bad b'cuz we literally watch the ship take off w/o us.  I kept telling myself why I always have to do things the last minute.  Very frustrating.

YEP..I have had this exact same viscious cycle since childhood. And I had a well-balanced diet as a child since my mother was a dietetician at one point in her life. I was never tired at night and can't fall asleep until late. Then I don't want to wake up in the morning. Hit the snooze..all the same stuff.
But can you really attribute this to ADD?  I think if you really put yourself in a habit of just waking on the alarm no matter what  then the problem should go away right?
I think it can most definitely be attributed to ADD. Our brain chemistry doesn't work the same as everyone elses, and that includes the sleep cycle aspect too (for most of us anyway).

I've had people telling me for years that if I just get up the same time every morning, I'd "get used to it". Personally, I equate that to constantly being told to "just pay attention".

We can always rig our own I guess. Floodlamp set to a light timer, potpurri machine set to a light timer, and then a noisy alarm clock.

The only other option, then BCgirl is to stick to the real 0 alarm you saw. I bet that one really works.

It's supposed to work wonders on some people. I saw a documentary once about Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) - people who get severely depressed during the winter months due to shorter sunlight hours. They have these light-therapy lamps that are about the size of a small window. The fancier ones (therefore more $$) gradually get brighter and brighter, starting out bluish, and then progressing to more orangey hues, just like a natural sunrise. Then you can get even more elaborate by adding sounds such as chirping birds, etc. I thought - HOLY CRAP! Just what I need.

They are so expensive though.
bcgirl197838499.3745486111Here's a link. Apparently they are good for treating ADD waking difficulties too. They seem to have evolved since I saw that show - you can now buy them in smaller, more practical styles such as floor lamps:

nothappy38499.4089930556Low sugar is why also cause no food sincce dinner. Eat fruito or drink juices help raise blood sugar also. Low sugar levels occur in the morning cause you have a empty body. Try 1 glass of juice or fruit in the mornings. These adhd meds probably make it worse. Here no one is a morning person. No citrus though will effect absorbtion rates on meds. I have one of those alarm clocks (see the link). It doesn't get bright enough to really have an effect and the 'nature' sounds are a JOKE! Save your money.
I have one of those alarm clocks (see the link). Thanks for the tip!  I actually went to ebay to look for one. I found one but I was reluctant to bid on it - now I know why! Gotta love intuition.

Holy Crap!!! I need one of these for winter! If there is anything worse than getting up early, it's getting up early in the dark!!! I've always wanted to try one try one of those light therapy lamps - the ones that simulate a sunrise - but with a price tag of well over 0.... well, I've never bothered.

This little thing seems like something worth trying.

I am going thru the process of divorce (after 17yrs), just learned this week that he wasnt at all the person I thought, and with a new job with a micro-manager - well let's say my already messed up sleep cycle is reaching a critical mass. I don't sleep, when I do manage to sleep, i usually wake up at 3am thinking about something i forgot to do at work, i get up & go to the PC & start working until 5am, crash & wake up at 7/8am & crawl to work. Many nights i dont ever go to bed. But in recent weeks, I have been so exhausted from stress that i dont hear my alarm. I added a second alarm, a wake up service, but i dont hear it. i have always been a light sleeper. Now if i am crashed, theres no waking me. i have missed work, meetings, dr appts, anything in the morning is subject to a no show. I didnt wake until 3pm today, after my boss had called, my assistant (she even came to my home & pounded on my door). Then around 3pm my neighbor called, and this time i heard the phone. when i looked at the clock, i threw up. i am probably going to be fired, or at least tortured. my psychitrist wont call me back since i have missed appointments (but i cannot count on my body in the mornign) i recently went off of wellbutrin, and have been trying to get into see the dr. he is booked solid.I am a wreck. I need help. My life is just not working for me anymore. I am up & down depending on my stress level for that day.
signed,
off to sleep. .... ... .. Well, I have a 13 month old and so that is my wake up call each and every morning...."UP, UP, BABA,BABA?"  is what I hear lol.  BUT, She went with my parents for the past two days and I totally can't get out of BED!!!!    I have been getting up at 11am!  Oh boy (or is it a girl - LOL). I will get my life straightened out before I have babies, but it better be sooner than later - just turned 35 last weekend.       lol it's a girl, and honestly, she has helped me so much in so many ways!  She keeps me busy and focused on her and that is exactly what we both need!  It's amazing how a little person can make you so focused that you actually forget to be hard on yourself! lol  and honestly, she is away and you'd think i'd be different, less stressed or whatever, but it's the same.  Sorry for babbling                           I remember thinking how cruel it is to be created a creature who loves the morning for sleep and to have to wake earlier than 8 A.M.  It seemed like cruel and unusual punishment for me.   I would also often miss my breakfast.   I still struggle with it.   I think my supplements are helping to where I can throw myself out of bed, and it is not so hard anymore.... I actually feel now I cannot stay in bed much, that I must go to bed and I sleep well.... So anything is possible..... I really enjoy sleep... The trick for me is to get to sleep earlier, which I struggle with...My husband  has  funny habbit with sleeping.   Unless he has urgent or important meeting, he always wake up in teh last minute , and go always to work 10-15 min late. But, when he has important work, he will  wake up without  alarm and be in his office  10-15 min in advance!! The  funny thing that  after the alarm  ring, he will change the setting to sleep for another 15 - 30 min!!!  He mis moornig shower, and sometime breakfast, jut to sleep extra  30 min!!!!
Even he slept 10 hours it is the same. In the weekend,  if he took alkhool, he will never get out of the bed until noon! but that  goes fine with me and my kid, becuease  we also stay at bed late in teh weekned
