Tourettes | ADHD Information

Any one else out there have Turettes syndrome? I was wondering how Adhd meds have effected your Tourettes. I start Adderoll Fri.My Turettes has gotten extremely mild over the years. I know meds can make it worse. At this point in my life I would gladly accept an increase in Turettes in exchange for being able to get things done.

There was an article in the magazine called Alternative Medicine which became geared to women that had a great article about ADHD and also mentioned Tourettes... One study talked about how zinc was important.  It also talked about many with Tourettes have deficiencies when it comes to Magnesium, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, and the B Vitamins..I don't know... You can only try what works for you...

Spaz, I can relate to teaching and having ADHD.  I am not sure my case was quite the same.  I taught in gang territory so that was extremely stressful for me.  My lack of organization definitely did hurt and frustrate me....

I also can tell you I was suffering from candida which basically fried my brain at the time... I would space out a lot because I didn't know I was having a lot of brain allergic reactions to things I was consuming and that hurt my performance...I am much better when it comes to taking care of myself internallly...

Basilio, Thank you so much for sharing the info from the article.

When I was teaching I found I would come up with Ideas, spend lots of time preparing them, then never use them.Spinning my wheels as usual.

I found my best Ideas came when I was flying by the seat of my pants.Unfortunatly those picky principals want lesson plans a week in advance.I found I almost never stuck to them.

I worked inner city once. Toughest job I ever had.I taught 5th and 6 grade resource.I had children who could barely read or write along with children who were almost on level.

Good for you for hanging in there. I am shure you made a diffrence in those childrens lives in ways you will never know

Elisa...I haven't tried Ritilan or Adderall, although I would like to, just to see if it helps with my focus, and therefore motivation, more than on Concerta, but my doctor doesn't want to put me on either and the state won't pay for either.

On Concerta my tics have not really gotten worse, at least the ones I'm most concerned about, which involve my head. But I have found I've started a new one with my fingers...to hard for me to describe or I would.

I have found, however my 'talking' has slowed down a bit. Just not my typing .

Basilio, I used to take, religiously, Vit B6...even before I was on any meds...and I liked it. My doctor has also recommended the same ones your article has. Unfortunately, I've not been taking them and have no excuse except procrastination. I was taking the Omega-3 pill, but found the caplette too large! I know there are foods I can take that have Omega-3 fatty acids, so could try eating it instead of in pill.

So when I begin my vitamins again, I'll try to include zinc and magnesium, along with C, E, A&D (which I used to take), and calcium (which is most important since I'm post meno)

Eliza

I took ritalin as a child. according to my mother it did not seem to make my tics worse. Hard to tell though as My Turettes was not yet diagnosed so didn't know to look for it.

I am now on Aderall, but only 5mg. as I am just starting and doc. likes to go slow. No increase in tics yet, but only been on meds 1 week tomorow. I will have to keep you posted.

Hi Spaz, Gypsy everyone.

I have a question,

has anyone who has Tourette's noticed they were worse with stimulants? And how worse are we talking? My tics are sort of related to my OCD, or my level of stress. I don't randomly swear or anything, but if I get really angry about something it can take a while to simmer down, because I obsess about it. This makes me want to swear under my breath or get tense and start ticcing. I have to try and avoid getting agro about things.

Gypsy, concerta works for you, have you ever tried Ritalin or Adderal?

Strattera is not bad, but I would like to try some others so I can compare.

Raz, I've also had tics/jerks since I was 5 or 6, but it may have been sooner. No one thought very much of it, since that was over 50 years ago. They just thought I was a very hyper, nervous child and adult and no one really talked about.    It sounds like I also may have more severe Tourettes than you do, and they have not really lessened as I grew older. (Maybe I should have had children, like you.)

BTW, I also edited my post above, with some additional information, Raz.

I was put on Paxil for depression, which now I realize was a result of living undiagnosed for so long with AD/HD (and Tourettes) dealing with the issues they created. Paxil is prescribed for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Tourettes Syndrome.

I do agree with floof, however, who responded to your other topic, "First day on meds" saying you probably feel 5 mg more than you can tell. The less you need to take of any of these meds, the better. And, Raz, it does take a while for your body to acclimate to the meds, which means even a couple weeks or more, let alone than one day. So hang in there, and see what happens.

Any questions also should be directed to your doctor.

The doctor told my mom that the tics were caused by my hyperactivity. My adhd was diagnosed by school in third grade and I was put on Ritilin. My Adhd was not explained to me however and meds were stopped in 6 grade. I guess I just assumed it was something you outgrew, strange since I was a special edd. teacher and I was deffinatly educated on Adhd. I just never applied it to me. I would think about it then dissmiss it, figuring I was just looking for an excuse and just needed to work harder.Eventually I realized I absolutely could not work any harder and with added demands of childeren I was not even close to being able to keep up .Ouch I too have been diagnosed with mild depression and anxiety, due to Adhd untreated. I am going to treat Adhd and see if that aleviates deppression/anxiety... oh and thank you so much for sharing..Gypsy womyn.... I am 35 yrs old. I have never taken medication for Turettes. I looked into it about 8 yrs. ago,but meds were so strong and I was not yet done having children. I have had symptoms of turettes since I was three. It is now extremly mild. seemed to get better with birth of each child. I took ritalin for about three years as a child mom did not seem to think it increased my tics.My doc. perscribed only 5 mg. adderoll to start. I took first dose about three hours ago. It has not really had an effect on me at all.not likely to at this low of a dose. I am going to call in a few days and ask to up dose. I guess I will just see how it effects me and go from there. Paxil helps the Turrttes?Raz...I also have Tourettes Syndrome and I take Concerta for AD/HD. So far it hasn't affected my tics. They're not worse, they're not better. I do take Paxil to help with them, tho, and helps with depression also, which is a side effect for me of living and dealing undiagnosed over 50 years with AD/HD.

Concerta is a much milder stimulant than Adderall, so I can't say what will happen if you increase your dosage higher than 5 or 10mg.

There are people without OCD or Tourettes who develop tics on ADHD stimulants, as well as on Wellbutrin, and is stated as a possible side effect, as you already know.

May I ask how old you are, Raz? And have you ever taken any meds for TS?

Good luck.
