Unbreakable,
AD/HD IS a disability. There is no shame in having a disability and how could you possibly know how bad someone else's condition is when you have had no contact with that person. Your posts seem a little defensive.

Once again, TheDog is correct.
clearly this is not true as you state it.  it's based on defining entity and each individual case.  i doubt everyone with "adult" ADHD would say they are disabled, and some would consider it an asset.

as far as me being defensive;  it's more sceptical.

yes it was a bit smug, and i apologize to kdegs.  but i do doubt ADHD was the primary diagnosis.

unbreakable38484.8622337963ADHD is considered a disability and the difference comes in as if you are able to hold down a self supporting employment is how they look at it at ssi.  I recently went to a training at the developemental disability office for work and found out they do consider ADD a disability which I am happy about for my husband and child.

except when he works as a musician.

My brother has had several minor run ins with the police.  To compound the problem, he forgets court dates, and to pay legal fees to the court.
there is still more to this story.

i'd love have someone explain to me how, as an adult, ADHD totally disables you.  i just don't see it, and no one has it worse than me.

no SS doctor is going to report ADHD as the only factor in a total disability, let alone have SS approve it.

kdegs,

There is often a disability advocacy group associated with or similar to Legal Aid in many cities.  Perhaps your brother would qualify for their services.

my opinion is just that, an opinion.  my only point is to look closer.

has anyone personally been classified as totally disabled by Social Security as an adult with ADHD and nothing else?

has anyone been classified by any governement agency as totally disabled with Adult ADHD as the only diagnosis?

the 112.11 listing with SS is for children, not adults.

this is from the SS secrets website, and a direct quote.

"Therefore, to win an ADHD disability claim, it is not simply enough to be given an ADHD diagnosis. "

Not likley ADHD was the primary diagnosis.  ADHD is not a disability in itself, if he did get it from just ADHD then it's a little fishy.  Can't work but as a musician, Give me a break.  I can't work either, except for watching TV.  You need to get his doctors reports and look closer.  Has to be more to the story or MA is truly the worst governed state in the union.  Not that its a suprise with the stance they take on other issues.  Ask you brother what his real problem is.

This site might help some people understand this process a bit more.

This is not a United States government site, but one with tips and advice.

ADHD is also listed as a disability that your children may qualify for benefits with...or even you, within the USA.

If your child qualifies then this might assist you in some way.

Disability Evaluation Under Social Security
(Blue Book- January 2005)

Hi!

My brother has had ADHD since he was born.  He's now 40 yrs old.  He went through an evaluation and has is now classified as "disabled" by the state of MA so he can qualify for state financial assistance.  He has always had a hard time holding down a job because of the ADHD, except when he works as a musician.

Does anyone know of any organizations or resources that have expertise in the area of legal advice for people with Adult ADHD?  My brother has had several minor run ins with the police.  To compound the problem, he forgets court dates, and to pay legal fees to the court.  It seems that he should have some accommodations made under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Have you asked the person that classified him as "disabled" because of the ADHD?

I would think that that "office" should be familiar with laws in the state of MA.

Good luck to both of you.

Take care!

I think if people with ADHD were classified as disabled, then the country would go bankrupt:) Of course, maybe this would apply to a small amount of ADHD cases..... Einstein somehow made it....Part of the reason people have more problems is because of pollution and the changing diet...
