?? about Clonidine for sleep prob... | ADHD Information

Clerch, the Clonidine did a "number" on my child the 2nd night, which others have had the same problem; however, others have had success with it. Just have to give it a try and see what happens. Another med that is of the same type for children is called Trazadone, I believe it is. Some prefer that one. Just ask your doctor about it.

Seeing how your child has always had sleeping problems, there might be another type of med for her. I know that Autistic & Asperger children have that problem so you could visit an Autistic/Asperger board and see what their doctors have recommended for children who naturally have sleeping problems. Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm just going to stick w/ the natural products for now, since the Clonidine wasn't a pleasant experience. The natural products that I give my child on a 2 week rotation schedule are: Melatonin, Valerian, Chamomile, and Calm's Forte. Also in the rotation, I give her the 25mg dosage of the OTC product Diphenhydramine HCI (aka Benadryl). Her doctor recommended each of these products.

Best of luck to you~*

Hello!

My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD/ODD when she was 4 years old.  She has been on Concerta now for about a year. She has always had a terrible time falling asleep (even before meds). I've tried Melatonin (no success), and now am going to try Clonidine.

Any input????

Thanks

I'm not a child, I"m a 25 year old mother.  I did want to respond though and say that I take Concerta and also Klonopin..or the generic version that you are speaking of.  I noticed after the first time I took it, it didn't work as well after.  I took one which was the lowest doseage...0.5mg and it just wasn't working.  I was up until 1am and even at that had to force myself to just lie down and go to bed.  When I take two it works much better.  HTH.

Hi,

My 10 yr old daughter is presently taking Adderall XR for her ADHD prob. She has problems sleeping due to the med. For the past 3 yrs, I've given her natural sleeping products (ex: melatonin, valerian, etc), alternating them because her body adjusts to them, causing them to not work. At her last visit, her doc suggested trying her on 1/2 tab (0.5mg) at night for her problem. My questions are...

(1) Have any of you had any experience w/ this drug in a similar situation? If so, what negative side effects should I expect?

(2) And...how long before her bedtime should I give her the med? I have no clue!

Thank you for your help!!

Lisa

Thanks, Carolyn, for replying. Two nights ago was my child's first night on the clonidine, which I guessed on the administering time and gave it to her an hr before bed. Worked like a charm! She instantly fell asleep and slept soundly all night. Unfortunately, it did the complete opposite last night. It kept her wide awake, emotionally upset, depressed, and just plain looney up until she finally fell asleep around 3am this morn. Needless to say, it's been a LONG night!! Back to the natural products again. UGH!

Note: 2 nights ago clonidine was taken on a day of Adderall XL (takes on the weekdays) but last night's clonidine was taken on a day of Concerta (takes on the wkends). I don't know if the Concerta/Clonidine combo was the problem. Something to think about. Alternating Adderall & Concerta helps my child's problem of her body adjusting to the meds, in case one was wondering why this protocol.

my 5 year old takes clonidine 1 hour before bedtime and in about 45 minutes he is outdoes that med make just sleepy? or does it put them in a deep sleep state?

the medication you mentioned  i took it for high blood   i mayself would not give my son meds i knew to be used for high blood   but i do say it helpped with  my sleep too

Clonazepam 0.5 is the generic of Klonopin 0.5 a benzodiazepam same family as Valium used for anxiety, sleep, seizures, slows down the brain and knocks you out :D Clonidine is the generic form of the brand name Catapres (also comes in patches) that is used to lower blood pressure and make you relax or pass out after a long day of stimulants. Jilly, you take two 0.5mg of clonazepam? You should just tell your doc to prescribe you the 1mg clonazepams if the 0.5 don't work as well. Valerian is awesome! I still have a tea that I bought at the store that has the Kava Kava in it. Amazing stuff. I went to find more of the tea and they no longer make it with the Kava. It's a bummer !!! They don't put it in stuff anymore I guess because it interacts with too many medications. But which ones! Stargazr or anyone know if I can find Kava anywhere?
