Hi I’m new . Need Help !!

Is he on meds. in the evening?  Try other medication if this one is a problem.  Alot of ADHD kids have trouble sleeping..  Believe it or not the only way my son would sleep was for him to sleep in our room-mattress on the floor -till he was 11.  I do anything for sleep.  Nights are a real challenge.  He still reads till 11 or 12 each night.  In severe cases Ive known children to be prescribed sleeping pills.  Good Luck with your son and talk to your Doc.  Not all kids do well on certain medications, and have to try different ones till they find the right one for your child.  Don't give up.  During times when he has melt downs it may help to know that he is going to have problem times, and don't set any expectations during this time.  I let my child do something he really enjoys for an hour or until the eve. meds kicked in.  Also cuddling and just listening to him vent is helpful. No Dr. here: But I've heard that if you give a child with add/adhd COFFEE at bedtime OR when they start to come off their meds it does the opposite to them as to what it would do to you. In other words...it calms them down. Now this was from a friend of mine that has a child with add and she also gave her daughter CHOCOLATE before bed OR when she was coming off her meds and it wasn't time for more. Dunno if this is very healthy or not though. Can't be any worse than some of the meds.

Could be childhood onset bipolar, rather than ADHD. Those kids often don't sleep and get manic (energetic, mean, their second wind) at night. I'd take a look at it. Stimulants make them worse, not better as with ADHD kids.

Have you tried any other types of meds?  My daughter did well on Adderall but the side effects were too much for us to deal with, same thing as you VERY emotional and no sleep at night.  We tried Ritalin but I thought she was even MORE emotional on that.  She ended up taking just plain dexadrine in the generic form and it works well.  We also noticed that the long acting versions were NOT good for her, we couldn't control them as much, thats anything with SR, XL, LA in the title.  We give her two doses one in the morning and one in the afternoon, I wouldn't start a new drug on the long acting formula because you're stuck with it for the whole day if you don't like it!

Good luck to you and your family, I know this is a really hard time.

So, do you think I should try just the plain ritalin ? or what about Concerta or Straterra ?

Hi Everyone ! My name is Roxanne and I am new to the board !

We have 3 boys ...ages 22,18 & 6 ....and a new grandson due in Sept !  My problem child is my 6 yr old  My oldest son has ADD , but is not on Meds . My 2 older boys were never a behavior problem and were always very very good ! Then along came Peyton !! LOL Oh BOY !!  He's always been "High Maintenance" , "Demanding" and just "different" . He was diagnosed with ADHD about 4-5 months ago . He's on Adderall XR 15 mg ( we worked our way up to that ) but I am having a BIG problem !  He's really good during the day , but ....come 3-4 oclock in the afternoon its a NIGHTMARE !! Not every day , but most days ...... he starts to get uncontrollable ..............very emotional , angry, irritable UGGHH  He will go into a tantrum at the drop of a hat and cry and cry ....which is breaking my heart and getting me very frustrated !! Its like he is coming off of the meds ?? The we also have the sleep problem . Last night he was up almost the whole night . Its like he is exhausted in the afternoons too . About 2 wks ago I said ....screw this ....he's WORSE ON the meds than off !!!!  But then his teachers Immediately were calling .....he wasnt staying in his seat , he wasnt doing his work ect ect ...........so I had to put him back on it , at least until the end of the school yr which is in 2 wks ...TG !!!!  My Ped said that maybe we should switch to Ritalin LA ??????? but I havent gotten it yet ..............I really do not want him on meds .....but I know he needs them ! BUT .........i feel like he is way too volitale and I feel like he is becoming an emotional wreck ....which scares the crap out of me !!! I dont know what I should do ?? Has anyone else had these problems ? HELP !!!!!!

I have been in your shoes!  My 12 yr old (although still emotional) has come a long way.  He is on Concerta for the daytime and Lamictal for the afternoon  emotional rollercoaster he rides.  I know how sad it is to put your child on medicine.  Everyone has their opinion and wants to judge your parenting.  I have 3 other children and they don't have any of the same problems so I have realized it's not my parenting that is the problem.  When my son was about 6-7 yrs old the ped said to put him in the hospital because if not the violence could get out of control.  I thought how crazy...my 6 yr old?  I put him in the hospital which killed me.  They put him on a combination of meds and he just got better and better!  Now he is down to 2 meds a day.  Reading all of these side effects from the ADD meds scares me. My daughter was on a very low dosage of Straterra for a month and then we started several allergy medicines and everything went south! So we took her off everything and the Doc wants to start all over in a few weeks. We only have her on flonase now. I am scared to try any other ADD meds, other than straterra, because of all the horrible side effects I am reading about in here. It doesn't seem worth it. I don't know if I can deal with all of that. I think we have been through every med!   We are now using Concerta along with Lamictal (for the afternoon)  This is the best my 12 yr old has been.  It is still hard though.  He gets very emotional at times, never wants to do his homework and lies on regular basis.  There are times when I give up instead of putting up a fight to get him to do what I want.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

If your child really "needs" the meds ....you'll know ...and it is worth it ........IF we can find one that works , and with minimal SE . I HATE medicating my child ....but he was bouncing off the walls LOL Sut I also dont like the SE either ....so it puts you between a rock and a hard place. I think every child is different , and each parent has to do whats right for their child .

I spoke with the Ped today , and we are going to try just regular adderall twice a day ( generic ) Hopefully this will work !

The  coffee thing is  what they use  to do to us ""hyper kids"" in the late 70's  and  in the  early 80"s i need  to ask my momma  to see if  it  worked.....i doubt it  did  beacuse i grew up thinking  my  name was DAMMIT SHANNA....at least  thats  what i told  people  my  name  was
