Asking "why" | ADHD Information

Actually, BC, it's just there's soooo many people waiting ahead of me. But that's a good sign...and hopefully some of those who are/will read it are non-ADHDers who want to be more informed. You can't renew a book when there are people waiting for it. However, our library doesn't charge for overdue books....why? I don't know 'why.' (I had to keep with the topic. hee hee)Man this thread is too slow.
I haven't yet read "Driven to Distraction," but look forward to it one day. A lot of people are on the waiting list at the library! And what does that say about whether adhd is real or not?AHA! And what does it tell me about my patience, too?

The thing about people just 'going too slow' is definitely a problem for me. And visa versa. My going too fast is a problem for everyone else.

I do the same thing. Yet, on the other hand....at least for me...it drives me nuts when 'normal' people do this to me! Sometimes I scream...Why can't any one just give me a yes or no answer?!
I do that, too!

I read Delivered From Distraction, and I learned a lot about myself...and that was 1 of the points..  How we can talk about things, go on tangents, ask questions...but when the other person speaks or asks, we are just waiting for them to be quiet so we can talk or do something else... They tend to go too slow for me, ask too many questions, or just bore me....

LMAO, I'm always telling my BF to just say "yes" or "no"...and I can't think of a time I have just said yes/no to him....DOH!

yep yep, sounds familiar... I do the same thing. Yet, on the other hand....at least for me...it drives me nuts when 'normal' people do this to me! Sometimes I scream...Why can't any one just give me a yes or no answer?!

If I ask a friend "why?" before answering their question, they often think I somehow don't trust them, especially if the 'why' follows something they stated, rather than asked. KWIM? I suppose it does sound rude at times. But I also like to know the cause & effect of things, to understand better. I guess I just need to find another/better way to ask 'why.' hmmmm

Adhders also tend to ask questions 'out of the blue.' Almost as bad as our changing the subject. And this is another thing that drives my 'normal' friends crazy. "Where'd that come from?" Like I just did here.

I'm just curious, because this may just be me...

I always ask "why?"  If someone asks me anything, my 1st response is "why" (why do u need to know, why do u want to know, why r u asking...just WHY) LoL

Like if some1 asks me if I have a garage...I don't just say "yes"...I first have to ask "why"....even when I don't care "why"....

 anyone else?

Yep me too. And it drives everyone nuts. LOL All my life I have had the strong desire to follow cause & effect. I would never think in my mind "yes or no", instead I would think in my mind, what caused a person to ask a question about a garage out of the blue.

For us thoughts need to be one long fluid thought, no ending and no beginning. For someone to come and ask you if you if you have a gargage is strange thinking for us. In our heads we would have done a complete 360 degrees roundabout and land on the garage topic eventually. This is my personal theory..hehe but I am no doctor.

Back in the late 90's my ex and I used to hang out with his buddies after church. They kept asking me how I managed to bring up a topic that wasn't related to thei conversation. I always replied "because I think faster and I am already on the next topic".

LMAO, I say that all the time as a "joke."  Other people just can't keep up...

I understand the thing about others keeping up.  I love it when I can have a conversation with another ADD'er cause they can keep up!  And they don't mind the tangents, they just go along.  I'm also very irritated by redundancy.  Aahhhhhh!!!

With the why thing I relate also.  I drove my parents nuts growing up because I always wanted to know why.  Even when in trouble I would ask why, they saw it as being defiant, and I couldn't understand why they sent me to my room.  Now I've just learned to word the why questions in different ways.  "So the thing with the thing does that because...."

Ah, another virgo! Hi Danielle! Redundancy annoys me too, unless it's when I want someone to repeat something, because I have forgotten. So often it's me who forgets what someone told me or said, so I'm always asking the same questions....and that's redundancy on my part. And I know it drives my friends crazy!LoL, same here, I do it always to my husband....it's for me, bc I feel like they are insinuating that I'm doing something wrong or I take EVERYTHING personal!
