Finding Dr. for eval | ADHD Information

Share
Hi,

I am a 50 y.o. woman and convinced I have ADD - pass all self-test with flying colors, self medicated with speed and cocaine as teen and well into adult years, read books - it ALL fits.  I have been "unofficially" dignosed by regular Dr. and have tried Ritalin (too speedy and aI have a drug history), Prozac (speedy) Zoloft (nothing) and currently Strattera which I don;t think is doign anything one way or another.  I need REAL help here. I would like to find a psychiatrist for proper evaluation, but live in NH and connot seem to find one that focuses (pun intended) on it. I looked into Dr. Hallowell in MA but cannot afford the process. Any directio, thoughts, etc. helpful.  Btw, there are not even any support groups in my area so i am feeling quite alone...

Hi tiaj! Welcome to the forum!    I appreciate your dilemma. I'm over 50 and was just diagnosed a few months ago, although I knew there was something different since I was at least 5 yrs old. (Unfortunate for us AD/HD wasn't recognized then as it is today in children. )

I've started Concerta, which is a much milder stimulant than Ritilan and Adderall, and long-acting. (Same drug as Ritilan, however.) I want to try Ritilan, but because of my alcholol/drug history (13 yrs sober!!!) they are hesitant. I've also been on Paxil for the depression due to living most my life undx'd with AD/HD. And on a mood stabilizer (Carbatrol). Between the three, I seem to be doing pretty well. I believe counseling or therapy is very important whether you're on meds or not. Because the awareness, I believe, is more important than the meds alone, which only work with you helping yourself. There is no miracle drug. Determination and knowledge!

How long have you been on Strattera? I don't know how long before it should take to 'work,' but most meds take a while, especially antidepressants. If you have any questions about any meds you're taking, I always found my pharmacist was the best source of answers.

Do you live very far from Portland, Maine? You may have better luck finding someone to diagnose you there, if it's in driving (or bus) distance.

Meanwhile, the best medicine for me has been the support of this board. The people are extremely helpful. And just commiserating with others like ourselves, has been extremely therapeutic for me!

Good luck!GypsyWomyn38493.6811805556

Tiaj,

do you currently have insurance?  Or does the state you live in offer charity care if you don't have insurance?
