can anybody tell me something positve about ADHD i need it by tis wensday

There was an article in US News and World Reports on ADD  (4/26/04) - I have a quote from it taped to my computer:

""I tell my patients that if you are going to have anything, this is the disorder to have," says Brian Cohen, a therapist at the Hallowell Center who also has ADD.  "It's like training a dragon on a leash.  It may drag you around for years, but once you get it under control, you own all the magic and energy, and it's yours forever.""

My daughter is able to look at the world in ways I'd never think of.  I attribute that to the ADD. With her energy and her intelligence, there's nothing to stop her from being a star.  You certainly know about all the important historical figures who are believed to have had ADHD, right?

I just posted this on the parent's section before reading your entry.  Kind of cosmic!  Anyway, this is what I posted--Things I love about my ADHD child:

Tons of energy, accompanied by sparkling eyes.  I love the way his eyes sparkle when he is laughing or is up to no good.

Looks at life as one big adventure.

Can speak his mind and stand up for himself.

Loves people, all ages and issues, unless the person is a bully.  Can recognize both adult and child bullies and will have nothing to do with them.

The thing I like best about having ADHD is I can Multi-Task, that doesn't mean I get every thing accomplished.

I love your perspectives on things.  Sometimes you just need to step back and look at things through different eyes. Thanks.

We had another wild night last night with a trip to the emergency room for stitches to the head, really put things into perspective.  You realize that you would just die if anything happened to him.  Watching the pain he was in and having to be forcibly restrained by four people was almost more than I could bear to watch him go through.  He is back to his loving aggressive wild little self this morning, and am I grateful!!

Thank you again.

i HATE having ADHD!

however, i love the fact that i can have fun! (even if everybody says i'm immature because i am the only 18 year old who always wants to play around etc)

and i love the creativity that i have. i am not an artist- i cant even draw! BUT i love to make things and make people happy by giving them hand-made craft stuff that i have done.

there are ups and downs to everything, these are some of the ups that i find about having ADHD.

hope it helps

I wish I had something positive to offer, I clicked on this posting, hoping that someone had some words of encouragement.  My child can be an angel, but when he's not, he's REALLY not.  I think the love I feel for him, is much deeper because I know how much he needs me and he doesn't even know it yet.  He's only three and I have been fighting for him since he was 15 months old.  So, if I have anything positive to offer it is the closer bond that we now share.

Another good thing about ADHD:

If you didn't have it, and hadn't lived through it, you wouldn't be who you are today - as embaressingly sappy as that is, it's true.

I'd have to say it sucks primarily, The only good thing it's helped me at is the ability to try anything.  I'm good at most everything hands on but it took alot of frustration to get here

JayneLizzy,

Who are the stars?  I would love to know.  Also, have you ever thought about fictional characters or historical figures, who have some of the characteristics?  This is my list:

Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, Daniel Boone, Jim Bowie, Wild Bill Cody, Davy Crockett, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Annie Oakley, Scout (from To Kill a Mockingbird), Woody Guthrie

Heck, if you look at the history of our country's pioneers, you have to say ADHD was prized.  Read about their lives--trouble functioning in the school environment, choosing running free to academics, "wild" nature to their personalities, abundance of physical energy, etc.  This is something that truly fascinates me!  The ADHD personality used to not only be O.K., but it was valued.  When did all this change?

And the Native American tribes...All the tales of the young warriors.

In the history of our country, the list goes on and on.

lillian38514.3808564815They are usually right brain dominant which art and music are things they are good at. Yes, look for a site called "The Gift of ADHD" there is an article written by a
Jewish Mother about her daughter. She has now written a couple of books.
It is well worth the read. I wish I had read it when my son was younger. Lillian...you are soooo right in your analogy of our children with ADHD!!  I could not have said it better.  My sentiments exactly!!!  Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
