Hi Marie23,
I have been through a series of antidepressants before identifying ADD. Some of them worked briefly, but not in the long run. I also tried Strattera for about 8 months, and it was largely ineffective. I have now been on Ritalin for 4 weeks. I have experienced a wholesale change. As an interesting side effect, some major feelings are coming up concerning "where I am" in life and "where I've been". Sort of like long term memory gain. I wonder if this is similar to what people go through when they get sober. I rarely use alcohol and never any other substances besides nicotine and caffeine. Nonetheless, I've likened some of my less enjoyable life experiences to the types of issues substance abusers sometimes have. I also attend a 12-step support group for people related to or in relationships with alcoholics. (I qualify b/c of a parent). The program of spirituality has been extremely helpful, if only to address emotional issues that often accompany Adult ADD.
Sorry to get off topic--SO Ritalin gets my #1 vote so far. Wellbutrin seems to help w/ my accompanying depression, but did not remedy ADD alone. Effexor was probably the antidepressant that had the most beneficial impact on my ADD, but I would be relutant to reccomend it b/c if I ever forgot to take a dose I became deeply depressed & had migraines and stomache flu like symptoms by the afternoon. These side effects are rare, they tell me.
