It happened with my 8 yrs son too. On adderal Xr he was very angry, violent, and so on. Switched on Concerta 54 mg. In the beginning, he was all itch. a month pass, and he is doing very well with behavior. NO problem at all with itching, anymore.

My son is taking 20 mgs adderall xr in addition to reg. adderall 5mgs.  The regular is a generic form called Amphetamine Salts and come scored so you can break it in half easily.  I may just have him take the regular next school year because he does so much better on it.  He eats better, sleeps better and does not have quite the mood swings that he does with the XR.   The down fall for most is that the reg. has to be given three times a day--but personally I think it is more beneficial in helping keep ADHD symptoms at bay.   Great luck to you and your daughter--I hope you find something that works.

My daughter is 5 and was dx with adhd in April we have tried Addreall XR ,made her really angry and easily frustrated, and Concerta ,started having anxiety attacks. On concerta she would go outside and start scratching at her arns and legs and stressing about bees and wasps.

We stopped all her medicine. She was taking Concerta 27 mg, Tenex 2 mg, Ritalin 5 mg, Remeron 1/2 of a 15 mg at bedtime, and her asthma and allergy meds.

My question is what else is left to try? We have been avoiding straterra because we don't know the long term side effects. Does any one have any ideas what I ask the physciatrist (sp?) about. I like being informed so I am not at his mercy.

Thanks

My son had the same response with Ritalin LA - uncontrollable itching and when he scratched, he would get welts on his skin.  It was horrible!  Have you tried regular Adderall?  I know that Adderall XR and regular are pretty different.  There's also Metadate which we have not tried but I do know it's similar to Ritalin.

We did not have a good experience with Strattera but it might be worth trying.  It works well for some kids.  Your doctor might suggest it.  Go to www.elililly.com for more information.

Good luck!

Have you heard of Focalin?  It is a new refined version of Ritalin that is supposed to cause fewer side effects.  My 12-year-old ADHD son is doing very well on it.  On Concerta and Adderall XR, he experienced severe facial tics; Strattera gave him whopper migraines.  On Focalin his concentration is good but he doesn't feel flat.  The long-acting version of Focalin should be available sometime this summer; at this point the only option is a dose that lasts about 4 hours and can be given up to 3 times a day.

Good luck!  It's not easy.

My experience is that the longer-acting meds do not work as well in young
children because their bodies metabolize the meds faster (so they do not get
an even dosing, rather spikes and crashes). Perhaps you should experiment
with the shorter-acting versions first ...

My son was the same way on so many medicines when he was younger. at age five when  he was first diagnosed it was Ritalin, that stopped working so they put him on mentadate or something like that, that stopped so they increased Ritalin, he was on something else after that, then they put him on concerta and that was great, but then stopped working, so they upped the dosage, that stopped so they put him on adderall, that turned him into a violent little monster, then he went on strattera  which made him so sick, so now he's 11 and back on concerta he takes 72 mg. two 36 pills a Day, but this works so much for him. I guess you have to keep trying until you find what works for your child. Good luck!
