Concerta | ADHD Information
My six year old son is has been on Concerta for about 6 months. He has recently become very nervous and having irrational fears. He thinks that someone is grabbing him from under his bed and says that he actually feels things in his room. When placed in his room for a time out last night he freaked out, saying he heard someone in his room. Believing that this was mostly behavioral we moved him into another quiet room in the house, it was a little better, but he was just out of control screaming and crying and shaking. I have read that nervousness and psychosis are a side effect of Concerta. Anyone else had this happen with young children. Any help would be appreciated. WE have a Dr.'s appointment set for next week, but wanted some advice before that. My son is also a nervous child. In fact, his psych eval indicated he has some anxiety issues which I've heard can be common in ADHD kids. What type of doctor are you seeing next week? Hopefully a specialist? I know you're full of worry right now but try to hang in there. Good luck with the doc visit and let us know how it goes. I'll say some prayers for your family!i took my son off the concerta and started the ritalin back up first
thing this morning, compared to the last couple weeks of pure kaos,
today was a very good day, he was successful in school and did a huge
turn around at home tonite compared to last nite, he told me he was
feelin better tonite and he did nothing but shower me with kisses. the
last couple weeks he has been out of control and has had
"accidents" in his pants at school every day since starting the
concerta, first day off it and it seems like i have my lil boy somewhat
back. I wish others well with their children and their meds.
He is on the lowest dose. He has always been a bit of a nervous child, but this is so bizarre for him and it keeps getting worse. I hope that we are not dealing with other mental health issues at this young age. What dose is he taking? my son is on concerta and I've never seen this type of behavior. It might be that the dose is too high.Hi Tual, i also have a 6 yr old son that has been on concerta for 3
weeks, his behaviors have become increasingly out of control, he's
havin bowl movements in his pants at school and has been swearing
uncontrollably, even yellin racial slurs, which i dont understand
because he has a biracial family through his dads side. Last nite when
i told him he couldnt play with his video games due to the time of nite
he physically attacked me, calling me alot of names and spitting in my
face. When i put him in his room and shut the door he flipped out, took
toys and put holes in his door. He was on Ritalin before the concerta
but we felt he needed extended release meds, we didnt see these
behaviors so intense til the concerta. I have decided to take him off
the concerta.
my son has been on concerta 36mg for about 2 months, since being on this he has fears now things he did'nt before, bugs, and he even was scared of flowers which he had never been before. someone had said that concerta may cause fears and phobias.Joshsmom, have u talked to the doctor about this? when i
confronted my doctor she was quick to blame other stress factors
going on in the home, these problems were there b4 trhe concerta and he
wasnt so out of control.
My 12-year-old ADHD son was on Concerta (27 mg, then 36 mg) for a year and a half. (We took him off in February because he experienced facial tics and felt flat.) Because he was also diagnosed with anxiety, we were warned repeatedly by our pediatrician, psychologist and psychiatrist to watch for increased anxiety on stimulants. My understanding is that ADHD often goes hand-in-hand with anxiety, and the stimulants can exacerbate pre-existing anxiety. If he has always been a nervous child, it is highly likely Concerta is bringing out more anxiety in him. Please don't wait until next week to talk to your doctor about this issue; it deserves attention now.
