crying jags on Ritalin | ADHD Information

I have to tell you that I and 31 yrs and have been on ritalin since I was 8yrs old.  I with in the last year I changed to Straterra as I was told that I could take that during pregnancy.  I and now in the process of going back on my ritalin because the straterra gave me migranes at least once a week.

Ask the doctor about Ritalin sustained release it has worked for my for over twenty years.  It may work for you too.

HELP.....  after 2 weeks on Straterra....and finding myself as one of the 3% that gets a nasty side-effect that makes you feel like you're sunburned and sweating all the time....

I started Ritalin.... I'm crying at every little thing.....  I'm NOT energized at all... as a matter of fact I'm quite lethargic....

Has anyone else had these side effects?  I threw out almost half of my of Straterra.... am I going to have to toss almost workth of Ritalin too?

Mermandrea, I'm new here to this site.  My nine year old son has been on multiple med changes since age five.  Ritalin was the first tried, and it made him cry.  Others had other side effects such as tics.  Adderall caused the least obvious side effects, although sleep and appetite have been affected at various times.

Oh!  Something else to consider is IF the Ritalin is making you "lethargic," the dose may be too high.  Still.....the crying issue, that's why my son was taken off.

thanks leigh...

I was taking a very low doseage.... 5mg twice per day....

I've heard good things about Adderall.... will talk to Dr. tomorrow.

Just wanted to add . . .

First, is the crying occurring when the dose is wearing off and all the time?  If it is occurring when the dose is wearing off, you might be crashing and you actually might need a higher dose.  When my son was on too low a dose of Concerta (long-acting Ritalin) and the dose was wearing off in the afternoon, he was weepy and irritable.  So we raised the dose and the problem went away.  He has since stopped Concerta because of facial tics.  BTW, my son got migraines on Strattera.

Second, you might also want to ask your doc about Focalin.  It's a relatively new refined version of Ritalin that causes fewer side effects.  For example, my son does not have facial tics on Focalin, and he did on Adderall and Concerta.  My son actually likes Focalin because he says it doesn't make him feel flat the way Concerta did.  (He is 12 and takes 5 mg twice a day, but could add a 3rd dose if he were willing to go to the school nurse at lunchtime.  Long-acting Focalin should be available sometime this summer.)

Third, stimulants affect each person differently.  What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another person.  Unfortunately, it's a bit of a trial and error game.  Good luck, and please feel free to post again if you have further questions.

YES YES I HAVE!!!!

VERY MUCH SO!

WATCH YOUR DIET!

I couldn't figure it out, sometimes I'd just sit in a corner and want to cry and other times I wouldn't...

With me, it was sugars and caffeine, remove them and the ritalin works great...

other things to look out for are beef, citric acid(fruit) and ummm, something else..

anyways....check your diet! It screwed me!
