I absolutely agree that the chid may have a co exsisting condition because some of the behaviors you describe are not indicative of ADHD. The child may have emotional issues due to the divorce but if the psychiatrist is also blaming ADHD, I surely would question his credentials and I would in fact find another psychiatrist and have the diagnosis revisited.
Hi I am new to this site and glad that I found it! I have a 14 year old step son that lives with myself and my husband full time. He is VERY smart and could get straight A's with out blinking an eye, but he doesn't. He is currently on 72 mgs of Concerta and 50 mg of Zoloft. He has been on meds for 3.5 years now, first Rittilan then Adderall XR and finally Concerta. Initially Concerta worked great, his handwriting got better and grades went up right away. But now he is getting in trouble from all most every teacher, for not listening getting up in the middle of class, trying to be the class clown and not listening. He is also HIGHLY oppositional. He will only do what HE wants when HE wants to. One teacher said if HE decides to do the work and participate he is great, when HE decides NOT to do the work he won't do anything. He has gone to the point of sitting in class and telling teachers he is not going to do anything! Other behaviors include spitting in his 15 yr old sisters face because she told on him (his answer, she p***ED me off), he then threatened her "wait until next weekend at moms you will never be able to play sports again". The threat concerns me as I have seen this very scary side of him, he often tries to "blackmail" myself, husband and sisters. But very few get to see the scary side of him. So my question what medicine do we try next? He is very skinny but also very tall (5'8 right now, just went through a growth spurt) so I do not want to go back to the Adderall and have him get even thinner. And what about the behavior issues of threats, what else are we dealing with. The psychatrist seems to blaim alot on ADHD and parents divorce (Stepson was 2 at time of divorce) but I think that he may have some co existing scarier things going on. HELP
