My Son’s IEP | ADHD Information

Share

This is my first time on this message board.  My name is Christi and I have son who is going to be 9 in July.  I am currently involved in my son's IEP (individualized education program).  I am requesting that his school call in a behavior modification consultant and observe him to see where he'll need help & they denied me.  The school says that he's doing well and I do agree he is academically but behaviorally he's not (he has meltdowns, frustrations, anger, fear, anxiety, etc).  He is ADHD/ODD and his classified with Specific Learning Disability.  He has graphomotor problems (writing is awful), perceptional problems, but he has tested almost 6th grade level math and in listening comprehension.  He has a personal aide, gets occupational therapy and is in a resource room for 100 mins. a day, the rest of the day he is mainstreamed.  My problem is dealing with his school to get the support for the behavior.  All the school does when there is an issue with behavior is to redirect him.  I believe he should learn what triggers those behaviors on his own.  Learn how to relax, etc. because when he is redirected, etc. he is usually taken out of the classroom and with that he loses important time in the classroom.  I'm seeking mediation through our state's education department.  I have a parent advocate supporting me with same.  I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this same issue & what your outcome is.  Thank you - Christi (politics & budget!)
