Adderall as a Controlled Substance | ADHD Information

Is Adderall considered a controlled substance throughout the United States or does it vary by state?

I heard that you are only permitted to be prescribed one month at a time and that the prescription must be written by the doctor on special triplicate prescription paper.  Is that your experience where you live and is this the case for all ADD medications?  If so, that seems quite biased (and perhaps expensive?) for those with ADD.  Also, does that mean you have to go to the doctor every month (and take your child if he/she is on meds)?

Please post a quick note to say what state you are in and what the rules are.

We don't have the equivalent of a controlled substance in Canada.  A doctor may prescribe any ADD medication for several months at a time on one prescription paper and even indicate repeats.

To answer the question, It is ALL the USA, ATF AND FDA. They control all of them. NO REFILLS, must have new prescriptions and the dr has to write it. You can swing by the dr.'s office and pick up the script for no charge. But in every state, controlled substances are for 30 days only,FEDERAL LAW, there are no 3 month supplies or refills like some posters have stated.

Remember... controlled substance does not mean every pill with a prescription.

Now as far as canada, adderall is no longer on the market, canada pulled adderall. So you can't get it.

No, not all add scripts are controlled substances.

straterra is not so it can be prescribed and have refills.
bugzappers38505.8957291667I live in Texas, too. My step-daughter is on Adderall, and we can only get a one month supply at a time. The Rx has to picked up from the doctor.Connecticut we need monthly prescriptions for stimulants, written on regular prescription forms.  Dr. is also not permitted to post date prescriptions, so technically you are supposed to go to the Dr. each month for a prescription. hawks292138505.5528703704I live in hawaii. The rules, as I know them:
Only one month (30 days) at a time. Has to be a new prescription each month (no repeats). The paper has to be written out by the doctor, no copies. You can't really fold or mutilate the prx paper at all or they might suspect tampering. My doc only uses the one sheet, but he makes copies for records. You need all sorts of info, like your name and address and stuff. Also the doc's DEA # and stuff. This part is a clincher: you have to have the dose explicitly written including # of days (eg: "thirty (#30)"), and what form (eg: "tablet", "capsule") and some other stuff. Also the directions.     I remember reading one forum where some guy's pharmacey filled the prescription as 30 pills instead of 30 days. He was on two a day, so only had 15 days worth. They wouldn't fill a new one till the month was up. His doctor probably wasn't explicit enough. My prescription says "one 20mg and one 10mg taken ... for a total of 30mg..."
Since it is a controlled substance, easily and often abused, they need to keep tight wraps on who's got, and how often. Lots of college kids abuse it to go on drinking binges (makes you less sleepy, ie. you can drink more before passing out). It's also addictive.  It is kind of a pain in the ass, but warented.
My dr. mails me a 30-day prescription once a month. It's a typed copy each time, he just signs in ink. I've never had a problem getting it filled.Texas is where we are at. We can go every 3 months cause is regulated and on Strattera and Depakote. He has to get blood levels done. I think our sons issue really is a seizure issue not adhd. His tests (EEG) didn't show it. I see quick episodes of inattentiveness not all the time. His eeg shows his trouble isn't alway it's just sometimes. weird! Until we can catch this on a EEG he is with this lable. Not good also. Brent38505.3734027778This  only applies with stimulant meds only. Non stimulant meds can get called in. Usa rules here.We go every 3 months cause he also is on depakote also. This requires blood work level.

Every 3 months is still better than once a month like I have heard in some states (NY I believe).  What state are you in?What is the deal with that anyway? My doc said she did not like to prescribe adderall because it is addicitive. Then turned around and told me I might have to be on meds indefinitely(sp?). What is the difference? Drugs the rest of your life or being addicted?
