Try Dmae or GNC'S attentive child. Herd can work for some. Dmae made son worse said school. I think it was really the cafateria food that did it. It is not that healthy also. I believe this is because adhd is a brain miss firing issue and that's why there are not working all the time. The meds. I been doing research on supplements and came across several kinds. anyway i just ordered valerian super calm for kids and waiting to try it. My son is on strattera 25 mgs it did help with school but he is still moody and hyper and i refuse to increase the dose and/or add another med. I'll keep you updated with the result. I also found another supplement ambrotose, but opted not to try it yet and see if valerian will help. Anybody heard or tried these supplements yet?I've read that Valerian can be toxic. Be careful, read up on it first.ever body is different and what it will handle. The issue we have found is what the side effects say he usually has oppoisite results to.  I believe a persons diet makes the difference. You are what you put in to the body. This is fact. Dr.'s no nothing about health and nutrition only someone who is educated on health and fitness. Wife went to a fitness center with a nutrition person who also says that enzymes are lessoned at age 30 and over so there for all should have added based on body type. These are what that type is most defeciant in. There are before ones after ones  should take. There they also got to eat beef that had been grass fed only. Dry taste. Yes, refine carbs are only necessary for energy. Today there are lots of Toxins in the soils and environmemt that were not there before. In our sons case my wife has family history of various issues similar to his so that is where his might of came from also. She has the same troubles he does and learns just like he does. Strange right.

Dear Lord.  My children are processed pizzas and chicken nuggets.

Brent, thank you for your reply.  I'll keep you posted on what I do.  I hope this change is one of our last.

My son (5 yrs) has been on several types of medicine since he was about 4.  Tenex, Risperdal, Straterra, Clondine, Ritilian, Seroquel.  Seems like they worked for a short time, then stopped.  For the past couple of months he has not been on any medication because the last dr's appt the doctor wanted to switch him once again and i couldn't put this through that again.  He has been taking a vitamin from Arizona Health Foods called "Attention" by MRM.  He seemed to work for his "attention", but not his hyperness.  The previous poster who talked about how her child acted sounded like my son.  I'd like to get him on to something that would calm him down, but I don't know what to try.  Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thxs

Michele

Brent,

I was JUST about to send you a private message to ask you something (after having read a number of your posts on alternatives to medicine).  Then I saw this topic started by you.  Great timing!

We have been down such a long road.  If you don't mind a little personal history, here goes. Son is nine.  Diagnosed ADHD at age five (so was I, but it was called hyperkinetic).  Behavior issues at home include major backtalk, argumentative, crying tantrums over being told no and stubborn as they get).  No violent behaviors, though, and he's well behaved for everyone except my husband and me.  I have my thoughts on why that is, though.  I think you've seen some of my posts about it??? History of diagnosed "issues" on my mom's and father's side of the family.  Anyway, my son has been on 9 meds (13 changes in his meds) over the last four years.  Some have caused tics, emotions to run wacky, etc.  Adderall seem to have been the biggest help, but we ALWAYS reach a point where it just seems to stop working.  Weight loss with it has been a problem, and my child has a horrible time falling asleep (may have to do with big-time anxieties).  Doctor suggested the possibility of bi-polar last year.  I read and read and read up on it and had my doubts.  Risperdal did seem to calm him some but gave him a horrible muscle-cramping reaction, so that was out the window.  Next was Prozac.  He became overly hyper (which made the doctor suspect bipolar even more).  I still had my doubts based on what I've studied.  Now he's on Depakote.  I don't see much of a difference.  Maybe there are fewer tantrums, but he's been out of school for a couple of weeks, and of COURSE the tantrums are going to lessen.

The doctor suggested staying on Adderall and Depakote and not going off anything over the summer.  I've just decided, though, I can't keep popping pills in him.  I wouldn't feel this way if we had only tried a few, but it's an everchanging guinea pig situation we have going on here, I'm afraid.  Based on what you know, do you think I'm NUTS for wanting to just take him off and start the vitamin and Omega 3 route?  I seem to go into this mode every summer but start the school year with teachers telling me he can barely focus on anything. Is there anything else you would suggest???  I saw on one topic where you were talking about food and evening meals.  Do you really think these changes would make a difference?  Oh, boy, would I love to know what you think when you have a moment to reply.  I'm sick of the pills.  We were even instructed by the doctor to give him 6mg melatonin and 2 Benedryl for sleep.  And it's not working!  I'm horrified by what I've put in his little body.

Hello

You are not the only one who is feed up with pills, My son is ADHD and he walked at 8 months or should I say ran and never stopped. He is now almost 12 and has been on concerta for 5 years and recently started to have chest pain and his heart would race fast and hard. I have had it with giving him pills he has been off everything for 5 days now he is dong well but still gets hyper I am going to try taking him to a shrink, to see if they can give him ways to cope when he feels out of control. One of the things I have used on him for years is when he gets very upset or angry, is Lamaze, you know, the breathing you do when you are in labor this works wonders, it really does. I hope all goes well for you and yours
