Just got back from the DR’s! | ADHD Information

We finally came home from the doctor's appt & food shopping.  My daughter's pediatrician said a few things he was worried about with my child & directed me to get her tested.  I called the child development center & they won't be able to get my child in (due to the fact there are not many doctors for that available) until Aug. & then to be tested in Dec.!!!!  I was like OMG I can't wait that long..........this has been since she's at least 4.  So she said the child psychologist may be able to see her sooner & first & then make the decision to get tested.  She said from what I told her (on the phone) that my daughter might have sensory problems & that is why her behavior is so awful.  Not sure, but I have to get my other daughter & her friend from school.  I'll write more about this later.  But please if any of you know anything about this sensagration stuff, please explain.  Thanking you ahead of time for your help.

Hi Sue-I want to say congratulations on moving toward the right diagnosis for your daughter. I am sure you feel overwhelmed right now-but you will begin to sort things out and make sense of everything!! We also had a long wait when we initially had my son tested.  He was diagnosed with Sensory Integration Dysfunction when he was 3(he is now 8) I highly reccommend the two books by Carol kranowitz-The Out-of-Sync-child and the Out-of Sync-Child has fun.  Carol puts everything into a very understandable language.  Both of my sons have had Occupational Therapy for sensory issues and they have done extremely well over coming their problems.  I have also learned a lot along the way on how to help them and then teach them to help themselves get the correct input their bodies need.  I have attended several area conferences on sensory issues and was highly impressed with an OT from canada named Paula Aquilla-she also has a book called "Building Bridges through Sensory Integration."  Also a good website is www.sensoryresources.com. Make sure the OT who evaluates or works with your daughter specializes in sensory issues for children.  we went to an OT once who said everything was fine and didn't know what she was talking about.

The bus is here-gotta scoot for now!

Thanks for the info.  I thought maybe I was on the wrong support site.  But maybe I am not.  The psychologist will be calling on Friday, so I will write more then.  Yes I am overwhelmed by all of this.  I've been for a while now.  With my daughter, my own issues & my mom-in-law being mentally ill.  I have it from everywhere!!!!  But I have to do what is best for my child.  And like they say MOM knows best!!!!!!!!!!  Thanks again.

Sue

what other tests need to be taken? good luck..... I am so glad that you are on the path to getting some answers. Read all you can on these issues, so you will know what you are working with. Just because she can't be tested for a little while does not mean that you can't start to implement some useful techniques to curb her behavior. Good luck!I would like to hear more also.  My daughter was diagnose with adhd, however she is a very sensory kid.  Also my nephew 2.5 is also very sensory driven.

I don't know what other tests they will be taking.  The pschychologist is not in, but will be calling me on Friday.  I can ask her.  I guess to rule out any other things.  But I have to say also, that my daughter is overweight, she is 93 lbs and only 8 years old.  She is not tall, I guess average.  I went to the library to get some books this morning.  And yes I will be finding out all I can to start knowing how to deal with my daughter.  At least, I have some peace this morning, knowing that there is a problem.  I will keep you guys posted & thanks for the replies!

PS>  She will also be going to a nutritionist for the weight problem.
