can you just stop strattera????? | ADHD Information

My son's doc told us that he needed to stop strattera gradually. Has
anyone weened off of strattera this way or have you stopped cold turkey?
If so, what type of side effects can we expect? He takes 36mg daily and
has been on for almost two years. We can not wait to be rid of this drug!
Stopping cold turkey is never a good idea.  Straterra, like Prozac is a reuptake inhibitor.  Although it works on different chemicals, most RI's require significant time to start working, and stopping immediately may cause depression, occasionally severe, usually unpleasant.  If you want off it fast, lower the dosage each day.  It is still better than stopping cold turkey.  Personally I stopped cold turkey on Effexor and found the withdrawl lasted for a week or so, mild--annoying depressive state.  No experience with strattera thou.

wait stop!xdxfp has told you why not to stop cold turky.  it take s strattera about 4-6 weeks to fully get in the system. so if you stop during this time no problem, but if you have been on it longer them I would ween like your doc. said.  your son will feel withdrawls and he may not be able to handle it.  however, if you are starting a new rx you may be able to cut the dosage in half while increasing the dosage of the new rx.

(I am not a doc,  he would be more qualified to answer your question.)

I was on it for about 2 months.

I just stopped cold turkey and suffered NO effects from it.

The doc told me that since it isn't a strong stimulant and it's non addictive you can just stop.

My son stopped cold turkey with no ill effects but he was only on it for about 10 weeks (40mg).

my friend did it with her son for the summer. He had no problem as a result.

I stopped after more than a year and the biggest difference for me is that now I'm more awake.  It just wasn't helping.

I just got off it...no problems whatsoever..quit cold turkey..easiest thing I ever gave up (Well sort of).Not a problem for me either when I stopped Strattera (was on it 3 mth) and am on AXR.
