New - Ques on Medication | ADHD Information

Share

Hi

I am new to board. my 5 yr old was diagnosed ADHD/Odd it is a long story. But

he was diagnosed at time of our seperation. But he has also had some issues

since he was 2 ,hitting etc. Most his issues are at school. I am still in doubt of

this daignoses though. Do any of your children have control at all. Mine seems

to have good weeks, bad weeks. he seems to have more problems being quiet,

blurting answers out.. Talks excessively. Those are what bother me more than

anything. But I still rather not have him medicated. Now I am in a custody battle

it seems more pressure is on me to medicate my son. He was offered a combination of Adderall and Prozac ( since he is dealing with a divorce) can

anyone tell me about these 2 given together. I am so scared to medicated my

child, I feel he is just too young. I would appreciate any feedbacks.

Thanks

If you're concerned, go for the Adderall, not the Prozac.  Prozac is an SSRI, which is theorized (thou not proven) to interact with Adderall and cause chemical disturbences in the brain (since they both deal with the release of seritonin).  We know so little about brain chemisty (they try to explain all human behavior based on four chemicals which they can measure in the brain-- which is rediculous).  Most of these "cures" are not designed, but accients.  Some science is involved (shows them where to look--chemically speaking), but 100's of useless chemicals [never released] are usually created before they develop one that works.  Once they run across a chemical that works, most of the work is in testing safety and effectiveness.  My point being that they know [almost] nothing about the detailed complexity of how the mind works.

Adderall is (off the label) an anti-depressant in and of it's self, and (when taken alone) has been proven safe in doses much higher than those usually prescribed.  Studying a single drug, like Adderall, costs many millions of dollars, and combinations of drugs are almost never studied.

Personally, I'd stick with the Adderall and go from there.
