I work in the computer field. I sit at a desk all day, occasionally answering the phone or going to a meeting. (I know that this isn't a good job for AD/HD)
Does anyone find that they work better if they listen to music to drown out all over distractions (other's phone calls, conversations, etc)? I'm considering getting an Ipod so I can program it with music that I like so I don't have to keep switching out CDs out of my computer all day long. Certain music helps me concentrate while other music can distract me. I like the idea that I can just put the songs I want onto the Ipod, leaving out the music that's too distracting. Some CDs contain both kinds of music, very annoying.
I know how unbelievably hard it is to get or stay organized, but does everyone else find that it's easier to work with an organized desk/work space? That seems to be the Catch 22, it's easier to work that way for me, but I find it hard to get my desk that way and even harder to keep it that way. I'm impressed with myself right now. I organized my desk 3 weeks ago and so far, no piles of stuff yet!
Is there anything else that you find that helps you to work better?

I find I work better if I listen to music, get up and move a bit, have a little fun, something really upbeat ya know? swing music or something to get my juices flowing then turn it off to work... I'm the opposite of you, I can't work at ALL with music....I hate to see a post with out a reply... IF I'm the one making the noise, great, but I can't concentrate when others are making the noise. some music I find beneficial, others are like finger nails on a chalk board. Having your own music sounds like a wise choice to me.
I love things to be neat...and I'm getting better at Keeping things neat...but someone else has to do the organizing.
Clean desk less distractions...But out of sight is also out of mind!
I went in for a hearing test...they had this little room that had total silence...at first it felt real strange ...by the time I was done with the test... I was thinking, what room do I have to convert into my own external stimulus free enviroment...for me complete silence was golden.
I can actually work better with the TV on. At least when I have to do really boring stuff, like entering data. Somehow it keeps me stimulated enough that I can transfer that 'attention' in bits to the work I'm doing.
This is one of the things that started me thinking "ADD?"
Well this is a bit old but it may help someone else. I can tell you that I have the same type of job. Exactly. For the mundane stuff like working with spreadsheets and creating reports I throw on my ipod and it really helps. Only issue is that sometimes I get distracted by the music or the Ipod itself and start downloading songs or copying new ones to it, or burning CD's for my car, then before I know it I am way off track. Don't know if that helps you but I don't mind having it as long as I don't let it become a distraction and let it help me concentrate.I go both ways with this one. Sometimes I need the bit of musical input to get going, inspire me or just to occupy parts of my overly active mind to I can concentrate with the bit I want.
Other days I can’t be doing with noise at all: no music or anything.
I find that whilst just anything you like (musically) is good for warm up activities or creativity, for dedicated working or thinking it’s either silence or classical music. Handle and Mozart work well for me.
