A week or so ago there was a thread about what ADD people get annoyed by. A lot of us said we didnt like long conversations.

So I post this, blatantly stolen from tradetricks.com:

"When you also want to avoid getting into an endlessly long and boring conversation with someone at work who doesn't know when to stop talking, but you must talk to them, do the following:

Open up your cellphone, and approach their cubicle. Say into the phone, "hold on one second." Then tell your talkative friend exactly what you need to tell them. They feel important because you interrupted your other conversation, but then you can motion to the phone to disengage them from any further small talk. Walk away and continue talking to your dial tone."

Unfortunately that doesn't work while at work.  We're discouraged from talking much on our cell phones.  That's a great idea for while not at work.

Then there are those of us who talk excessively to others...  People hate for me to leave phone messages.

Interesting idea.

Another one I use at work once in awhile is to stand up in my cubicle and grab either a clipboard with a notepad (like I'm about to go somewhere), or my coffee cup, or the restroom key.

Then, I just kind of make motions like I'm going somewhere and sort of ask, "do you want to walk with me while I go <someplace?.  Has been working pretty well.

Probably because I'm a classic ADHD extrovert type, people like to stop by for fun to chat. It's a compliment but 3 or 4 of these can result in losing an entire days worth of work (since I can't get back into it very easily). A lot of times I will wear BIG headphones. If they stop by, I only slide one ear off to say, "What?" I only sort of half turn around in my chair to address the person.  This works pretty well too (except for my natural desire to WANT to be distracted. )
