The notion of adults having ADHD is still so new here in Iceland, that I consider myself lucky that this group which I am participating in does exist at all. These weekly sessions are organized similar to AA-meetings, I've heard. One of us leads the sessions and each one of us is allowed to speak without beeing interrupted, sometimes you have to wait your turn for an hour.
It's very difficult for me just to talk to the group (not the monologue type), I need immediate feedback. But I feel that its unfair to criticize the way these sessions are organized, if I don't have any suggestions for different methods.
Any suggestions anyone?
Topic: How is your support group organized?
My support group is organized kind of the way this bboard is organized.
(Smart-@$$ IS my middle name)!
ZORG38526.6986226852I am looking for information on the methods used in adhd support group meetings. There is a great group not far from where I live, and I totally enjoy meeting these people, but I am not quite at ease with the way these weekly sessions are held.
I am just wondering if those of you who have attended a support group for adults could tell me how these groups are organized. Or how you would want such a group to operate.
Hope you can understand what I want, I am waiting for the right medication to make my mind and thus my writing clearer ...
Start your own group, the way you feel most comfortable participating with in it. Its for support right? No one needs to be an expert in ADHD to do this. Probably others feel as you do. Take an add out, post one in stores etc. put it on your community channel.....offer others maybe a hike and a chat instead of a stuffy room? I think better when I walk and I listen and retain conversations better too. I'd pass out from sheer boredom on a chair in a room unless I was doing all the talking! Together, you and your group can come up with coping ideas and strategies that you've heard about or tried. No coach needed. It only takes one to talk, one to listen and both to question and learn.
Good luck to you!
I'm interested in getting more information on support groups... I found one in my area that was ADD AA, a 12 step program. I also found one on the ADDA.com webite. What do support groups do? What do they offer?
