Stimulants

Hi, I am not on any medication at the moment, but I will soon be prescribed stimulants after my diagnosis is "complete". My question is, what do they actually do? I mean, i have read posts where people say that their memory and concentration is improved but in what way? Can you read without drifting off?does conversation flow more easily?what about listening?Sometimes when I'm listening to somebody, I can see their lips moving and know that they're making a sound but my brain doesn't seem to be processing it properly so I don't understand what they're saying. Also, I heard that people's self-esteem improves on stimulants, is this a direct effect from the meds or is it because they have more control over their life? Sorry for the barrage of questions but I'm still unsure about this whole medication thing.

Thanx

Hi,

I can only speak of how stimulants helped me in particuliar, and hopefully this will help.

Last year, I was mobilized in the military as part of Operation Enduring Freedom/Noble Eagle.  While residing in the barracks with 70 people, I found I could not concentrate on anything, I could not write a letter, I could not read a book, I could not play a card game.  I started on Concerta in July, and the difference it made was dramatic, within a couple of days I was finding I was reading, and reading alot, without distractions, I was able to sit on my bunk and concentrate on writing a letter, and I could do it.  I found I slept better at night, and was in a better mood during the day.

Hope that helps a bit, I'd gladly answer anything in particuliar you might want to know, that I may have neglected to say.  But those were the specific items that I immediately saw a drastic change in.

Chris
