Strattera is weight dependent..are you sure she's on enough? Strattera has an active life of about 5 hours, or so I'm told....would seem to me that she's sleeping through any benefit of the med.
Just a thought

Strattera is for anyone looking for a non-stim alternative. Kids absolutely can take it.
I wonderd how long it lasts ,and if she was sleeping it off ,That totally makes sence,,Thanks alot. do you have any suggestions on when the meds could be given?Ill be seing her doc soon ,I just need to have some suggestions to aproach him with. Thanksthere is also a post on the childrens board with a link "everything you need to know about strattera..." (by a mom) It had a lot of good info that might at least give you more insight but it also repeats some of what has already been written. Ok for kids, weight dependent, takes 4-6 weeks at full dose fo rfull affect, take on full stomach and split dosing is common. Check for the link - it gave me lots of info for my next appt w/ my sons ped. (stat 40 - 7yo - 60-lbs - some good some bad - takes at night - getting ready to tlak to dr about splitting dose)
Hope that helps - good luck.
We changed our 5 year old son to Strattera about 2 weeks ago. He is now up to 25mg and takes it at night mixed in various foods and drinks. After a day like today, I swear it's not doing anything. He was as hyper as ever all day. He was on Ritalin (terrible rebound effects) then Adderall (nasty behavior - mean, angry). We don't have the screaming, angry fits like before but his hyperactivity doesn't seem to be being helped at all. Am I too anxious to see results? HELP?It is supposed to take about 4-6 weeks for full effect....so unfortunately, only time will tell, My son is doing wonderfully on it, so try to stick it out, I hope you get the same result
Good Luck
My doctor said that strattera is like an anti-depressant is that true?
True. It is a SNRI...like Effexor.
This make so much sense now. My husband (not my son) is on Strattera. It made him so sleepy! Which he is usually a kind of tired person so that was bad. But it also made him nauseated, especially if he didn't eat before taking it. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this? I would ask your doc about times of dosage though, because the effects seem to wear off after about 4-5hrs (like someone else said). Sorry I can't offer more info, just confirming what others have already said.
It made my son too sleepy too...and always sick to his stomach.
You definitely have to eat with it....you really want a full stomach!
B/c it is a SNRI it does take weeks to see the full effect....it is also very weight dependent.
Damian 8 is now on Strattera - he takes it in the afternoon after school. He doesnt seem sleepy at all in the day time.
Perhaps you could try giving it to him at night?

My daughter is on a split dose 18ml in morning and 10ml in the pm for abount a week now ...Iv seen some good and some not so good results..I was wondering do you all cut back on there sugar intake too?Can some of you share with me what eles I can do or change to help the inprovement part ..cause I feel if I ask her doctor he will want to put her on a stimalent of some sort I need other alternitives...please ...thanks..She has been on stratara for 3 months all to gether..I just want this to work for her...oh thank you to everyone,we have an appointment next week and im ganna see if she can split the does 10 in morning and 10 ml in the afternoon..thank you again...My dd, who is 5 1/2 and weighs 45 pounds has been on Strattera (25 mg)for about 4 months.
We began by taking the meds at night. This made my daughter VERY restless in her sleeping. Also, after about 8 weeks, the benefits of the Strattera seemed to be minimizing a bit.
Our doctor said that kids metabolize their meds really quickly and that if you give them at night, she may be metabolizing it all inher sleep.
We decided to split her dose because the 25 mg in the morning made her SOOOO sleepy. Currently, she is on 10mg am and 10 mg pm. That would work perfectly for your daughter, so I would talk to her doc. Just so you know, she was still a bit drowsy on the 10 in the morning, but that wore off after about 10 days.
Good luck-
Suzi
my 11 yr dd is on strattera 40mg she gets sleepy about 2:00 inpm but sleeps well at night.
MY 7 yr old son has been on Strattera for a little more that 2 months now, and luckily he's practically side effect free. He does get a bit sleepy from time to time, but it usually passes in about an hour. If he's had a real busy day the day before he'll sometimes wind up falling asleep for short periods in the middle of the day, but thats rare. The sleepiness does get better with time. Dont get discouraged.
Good luck
Oh, and he has no trouble sleeping at night or staying asleep.
I needed to add that it took my daughter a full 4 weeks before the meds really kicked in. she took 25mg. of strattera and 25mg of adderall. without the adderall she was a mess. I was ready to quite but we hung in and now its been almost 3 months and all is well. give it time I took Strattera for a month and just stopped 2 weeks ago..it worked well, except for the sleepyness and lethargy. I also suffered just about every side effect imaginable within a 2 week period of time (And they did go away)...but I thought it wasn't really tested on children..at least thats what it says in the label..maybe i'm mistaken.
