anybody have migraines related to adhd? | ADHD Information
I’m in my mid 30’s, had my first migraine (that I called a migraine and
knew what one REALLY was) in my late 20’s. There seems to be NO
pattern regarding frequency, duration, or severity of my migraines
(hormonal, seasonal, stress level). I never tried stimulant meds
until a few months ago. Haven’t had one migraine in the 3-4
months since I began taking adderall. Prior to starting adderall,
I have gone for more than 4 months migraine free, so I’m unwilling to
say it’s the adderall that’s keeping them away.
After starting adderall--I have more frequent mild headaches (not bad
enough to even go find an asprin), but slightly annoying
none-the-less. Come to think of it, the mild headaches seem to
have subsided-I’m not getting them as much as I did when I first
started this drug. Keeping my fingers crossed--Imitrex and Zomig
are SO freaking expensive—but I’d pay much more to make migraine pain
go away—don’t tell the pharm. companies that!!
Edits below:
PS. I have never attributed my migraines to ADHD; never seen
anything that suggests a link between the 2. Also, I know I’m on
a stimulant med. and you’re on something else. Thus…in conclusion
(hee hee), I don’t see a correlation between my migraines, lack of
migraines, ADHD, stimulant meds, or even SRI’s or other reuptake
inhibitors. Who knows...maybe a good thesis project…
sakura38531.6967361111How do you know the migraines are related to ADHD? I get migraines at least once a month, I never thought they'd be related to my ADD though.
I always had severe migraines that were related my adhd. I used to get them once a week or more but now when I'm on strattera and it seems to have killed two birds with one stone. I haven't had a migrain since I've been on it. I was wondering if anyone else had simular problems? In the book Driven to Distraction...I don't remember the page # but it is in the section which describes ADD and disorders? like ADD and anxitey and in the section ADD and depression, it indicates that migranes maybe connected to ADD as can bulima, irritable bowel syndrome and three other disorders.

That's interesting, as I do have
Irritable Bowel Syndrome. But, I noticed when I was reading up on
Strattera, that one of the neurotransmitters directly involved in ADD
(norepinephrine, I think?), is also responsible for relaxing and
contracting the intestinal wall. So it does make sense. Ironically, I
noticed a dramatic decrease in IBS symptoms while on Strattera, but
unfortunately it did squat for my ADD, and also made my body
temperature go all wacky (chills one minute, hot sweats the next). It's
a shame because traditional IBS meds (anti-spasmodics) only ever
resulted in making me extremely, painfully bloated and gassey (sorry if
TMI).
As for Adderall's effect on migraines, I did notice while I was on
Dexedrine (which I've learned is the exact same drug as Adderall -
dextroamphetamine), that I had significantly fewer headaches. I get a
good migraine at least 5 or 6 times a year, but I get headaches on a
near-daily basis. I didn't reach for a single Tylenol while I was on
the Dexedrine.
Someone SHOULD do a thesis on this!

[/QUOTE] Opps sorry about the last post bcgirl1978. I also take strattera i have noticed some side effects but not IBS, I do seem to get cold more often. An occasional headache too, and sometime a burning in the lower regions but I deal with the effects, I also take adderral with it. Regarding the connection between ADD and migranes etc... I don't have IBS but I was a functioning bulimick(sp) for almost 20 years. I kicked before I was diagonsed with ADD. So I am onboard with the connection between ADD,IBS, bulmia....
