I have been doing some hand clapping lately. I can't remember if I did it when I was younger or not . I hadn't really thought about it till you brought it up. I think I do it when I'm inpatient, IE waiting for something in the microwave to get done.....How strange.
since I have gotten on meds I have been recognizing things I do that don't seem quite "normal". The hand clapping... I think... is anew thing for me....
Oh well!

It will be interesting to see what others have to say!
Ever since I was a kid for no apparent reason I'd like to clap my hands at anytime, especially when I was up and getting ready for scool, but really loud. I still do it just not as much. I am questioning the hand clapping because I don't know what it is. Is it part of ADD/ADHD or something completely different? Does anyone tend to make sound effects to themselves at anytime?I don't think it is quite that bad
I can control it easily if I am thinking about it and I think it is more to do with my mind racing and my body trying to keep up. When I start doing that now, she knows something is on my mind and she asks me what I'm thinking about. She knows if I start talking about it, I'll stop doing whatever it is that was annoying her
.
She's a smart one!

But I will talk to my doctor about that. I tend to keep my body busy if my mind is in a rut
In the car I am constantly tapping my hands to the beat, clicking a pencil repeatedly or making instrument sounds (you know, mimiking guitar, trumpet, drums or other sounds with my voice)
. It drives my wife nuts sometimes.
As a kid I did similar things in private and worked VERY hard to control myself when I was with friends or family so I wasn't looked at as an outcast or different. I guess with my wife we have gotten to that stage where we are very familiar with each other and I can let things slip

Sorting out which is which can be confusing ... but tics need not be severe ... here is a summary from multiple medical sources of the similarities and differences between the tics of TS and the stims of AS:
