Making sound effects | ADHD Information

I have been doing some hand clapping lately. I can't remember if I did it when I was younger or not . I hadn't really thought about it till you brought it up.  I think I do it when I'm inpatient, IE waiting for something in the microwave to get done.....How strange.

since I have gotten on meds I have been recognizing things I do that don't seem quite "normal".  The hand clapping... I think... is anew thing for me....

Oh well!

It will be interesting to see what others have to say!

Ever since I was a kid for no apparent reason I'd like to clap my hands at anytime, especially when I was up and getting ready for scool, but really loud. I still do it just not as much. I am questioning the hand clapping because I don't know what it is. Is it part of ADD/ADHD or something completely different? Does anyone tend to make sound effects to themselves at anytime?

I don't think it is quite that bad

I can control it easily if I am thinking about it and I think it is more to do with my mind racing and my body trying to keep up. When I start doing that now, she knows something is on my mind and she asks me what I'm thinking about. She knows if I start talking about it, I'll stop doing whatever it is that was annoying her.

She's a smart one!

I do it too. Been doing that all my life.Sounds like Tourette's.Tourette's can be mild or severe. Not everybody with Tourette's has the
stereotypical symptoms (swearing uncontrollably, barking, whatever).
There is a whole range, just like with ADHD. Stimulants can make tics
worse (it may be a worthwhile tradeoff, but ask your doc).Hmmm... but I've been on medication for my ADD/ADHD since the 4th grade, and from what I know I haven't had any tics in the past and I wasn't athletic either *terrible at softball*. My psychiatrist knows that I hand-flap when I'm excitied and I believe that's part of Asperger's *from my understanding* I just notice and remember me making noises at times, I thought it was a part of daily living.  But I will talk to my doctor about that.

I tend to keep my body busy if my mind is in a rut

In the car I am constantly tapping my hands to the beat, clicking a pencil repeatedly or making instrument sounds (you know, mimiking guitar, trumpet, drums or other sounds with my voice). It drives my wife nuts sometimes.

As a kid I did similar things in private and worked VERY hard to control myself when I was with friends or family so I wasn't looked at as an outcast or different. I guess with my wife we have gotten to that stage where we are very familiar with each other and I can let things slip

The information had alot of medical vocabulary that I didn't quite understand.fukaiotaku38552.7667013889Tics are part of the autism spectrum and can be part of Asperger's.  Sorting out which is which can be confusing ... but tics need not be severe ... here is a summary from multiple medical sources of the similarities and differences between the tics of TS and the stims of AS:

My husband has ADD and he has tmj where his jaw clicks when he eats certain foods.  He constantly does a dripping  noise and it sounds like a leaky focet.Well, I've noticed that I am happy when I make my "sounds" so to speak. They make me feel relaxed I guess. One that I've enjoyed lately is burping, even after drinking a soda or some form of liquid.  I checked out your TS site, although it left me a little confused, sorry. But it was good to explain the differences between autistic tics and then tourette's tics. ^_^That information, as indicated, is from three different medical sources and textbooks ... if you tell me which parts confused you, I may be able to help ???
