While at present I am being treated for ADHD, I entered the treatment comunity 12 years ago through a phsyciatric ward at the end of my rope, and was promptly diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, and treated as such with numerous medications. At one point...actually at 3 points, I was given ECT-(Electro-Convulsive Therapy). My doctor had told me that it was a safe procedure that offered relief to those who did not respond to medication. The only thing it relieved me of was the abillity to focus on anything. Maybe they figure if you can't think of anything you'll forget your depression too. I lost a big piece of my being through those shock treatments. Sweet, and not so sweet memories have been erased, short term memory fried to the point that I could not function at all, making for even more depression. Now I don't know a damn thing about how the brain functions, or what the long tearm effect of running electrical waves through your brain that induce convulsions, but I don't believe its such a good idea. And before all this happened, I had recieved a severe open-head injury, and though looking back I see I was suffering ADHD from my childhood, it was after the open-head injury that my problems with thought were compounded
I'm almost certain that if I had been properly diagnosed to begin with, my ADHD might have been more easily treated, and I'm almost certain that the head injury coupled with the shock treatments are the reason I require a larger dose of the Adderall XR used to treat my ADHD. I still have the same doctor I started with, and he refuses to put me over 60mg Adderall XR daily. I get so frustrated these days, I almost considered going back to the shock doc and let him fry me into a vegitative state so I don't know nothing. then what I don't know won't hurt me.
I am sorry you had gone through so much. I have heard with shock therapy that you do forget short term memory and who you are but it is temperary. I used to work in mental health and knew clients that had it done and then they would get very tired and sleep a lot. I have never heard of it perminent damage. I would maybe check with an attourney. I hope things get better for you.
