Focusing on things you wouldnt think....That's funny last weekend we had our son try fishing at my inlaws cottage and he loved it he sat there on the dock for a couple of hours (he didn't want to stop to eat supper). He was very patient and caught a few fish. He really enjoyed himself he wants to do it again. I thought he couldn't be quiet enough, partient enough and thought he would get bored and quit but he suprised us. Diane Well, it's just great to know that other ADHD kids enjoy fishing, too. Who would have ever thought?! I hope this is a long lasting thing for him. So far, he's been almost weekly since early May. And yes, it's just so nice for him to have that time alone with his dad. That's awesome! Was he medicated while he was fishing? I would love to find something for my son to enjoy without being medicated!Fishing, huh? Who would have figured Whatever works!
Cindy, he's not medicated at all now. It's such a long story, but after four years we had no choice but to give up on stimulants. The side effects he had were just too much. He's on mega vitamins, magnesium, Omega3 (DHA) and a couple other things. I have to say, it's the biggest difference I've noticed to date in his temperment and ability to handle disappointments. The real test will be school starting up in August and whether or not he can focus. We began this alternative route the first week in June. So, to get back to your question, LOL, he has not been medicated while fishing. And for the next few times he went, we hadn't even started the supplements yet. I know others have said their kids can focus on fishing, too. I still find it just......WOW.......incredible! :o)That's wonderful for your son. Also, he gets to spend some real quality time with his father one-on-one. I don't think my SD would do well at all. She could never be quiet enough. All the fish would know to steer clear of the persistant noise coming from her area.Last summer I took my son fishing for the first time. He loved it also. He was quiet and still for hours. He even asked me to be quiet so the fish couldn't hear us. I wa samazed. He has been a number of times since then and he has focussed well every time.My son was not medicated while fishing either. Maybe there is just something about it that calms them. I know another boy who is 12 with ADHD who enjoys fishing also.Oh, my daughter loves to fish too! IT amazed me also because during everyday life shes almost always singing, humming, or talking her head off, yet she sits so still & quiet while fishing! Her & my hubby are leaving for their annual wek-long camping trip this coming Friday & she's been buying lures & specialty bait with her allowance in anticipation! My son recently had a fishing experience too. All his cousins had caught fish, but my poor son could not seem to catch a break (or a fish) he sat at the river bank for hours until he caught his--and it was the largest of them all. My husband and I were remarking that this is the positive side of ADHD. These kids can have super focused consentration when it it something that they are interested in. And I might add, he was not medicated either. We too have decided to bag the Adderall--hated the side effects. That is so cute, Shadawbi! I love that! You should get some photos of your daughter fishing with her dad. That's just so special. :o) unconditionaluv, Adderall was the only thing to help with focusing (out of ALL the others which cause major tics and stomach aches), but it ALSO kept my son an emotional mess. He never ate, was angry and cried anytime things went wrong. We've gone "alternative" and have seen a huge difference. I'm glad stimulants work for so many kids. I've seen them work great. I wish we hadn't had such problems with them. I'm just thrilled to hear others are doing the fishing thing, too! Maybe they should come up with a school for ADHD kids that takes place at a quiet lake (where the teacher to student ratio is 1:1 ! LOL! That's a good idea. My son brought that up too, he asked us why we don't go camping and fish? I don't like to do that, but i told my husband that he could take the kids. |
